La'El Collins may be in play after all

It wouldn't be the first time the Panthers have benefitted from tragedy. In 2012 the murder/suicide in KC was THE only reason we lost that game. Without that loss Star is a saint.

PS-off topic, if not for the murder/suicide in KC and epic, Hollywood type fluke at home against the Bucs, we literally steamroll to 7 straight wins to end that year.

JR will have to give his blessings 1st.

But............

IF and when he's declared clear of any wrong doing, there will be a frenzy for his signature.

Keep in mind; the NFL has a rookie pool in place.

This means that every team that wants to sign him will offer pretty much the same type of contract. It will be up to La' el to choose the best fit for him.

So yes, we would have an excellent shot at signing him.

My question is: can he play left tackle? If Gettleman/Rivera don't think he's a legitimate left tackle, then I can't see him being brought in. We just drafted Daryl Williams to be the right tackle of the future and guard is set with Turner and Norwell. So unless they feel Collins can be the guy long-term at left tackle, I wouldn't look for him to be signed.

How much more money, including escalators, could he have made if some team drafted him?

(there's no way to be certain someone wouldn't have on day three)

Plus if he's taken now and - God forbid - gets hurt, what does he fall back on?

It was not a good strategy.

There are several articles explaining why.

Disbelief. That's what this post makes me feel. Pure disbelief. Whether he can play LT or not is completely irrelevant. The guy is a top 15 talent from the draft that we could sign to a cheap 3 year deal and he would instantly come in and compete (and likely win) for any spot on the o-line (except center), and it would instantly improve it. There is literally no reason that we wouldn't pursue him if he's innocent. And Mayock had him ranked as the #1 OT in the draft before it happened.

Love to have him here, but everyone take a breath. He and his family are from Baton Rouge and reportedly all are Taint fans. Family may trump friendship.

Since he went undrafted, he can't get a contract or signing bonus worth more than a drafted guy. The offer from us and every other team will be the same as the Taints offer, and he may choose to stay in Louisiana where his family is and where he went to college.

C'mon Trai, if you've got any dirt or incriminating photos of La'el in college, now's the time to use them.

You do realize he's literally cheaper than any other lineman on our team? He will cost peanuts.

This is a good article about why the decision to not go in the third day was the best option. Not only does he get to choose his own team, but he's only committed to a 3 year deal, not 4 years...and the monies made would be similar to a 2nd to 3rd rounder, without bonuses.

http://mweb.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/25172161/examining-why-its-better-for-lael-collins-that-he-went-undrafted

Consider that based on a 5 percent growth in the pool, a first round tender for Collins would cost $3.9 million in year four and he would make $5.46 million over four years, virtually identical to the 42nd pick. Again, if Collins is close to the player he is expected to be, the first round tender would be no surprise. With a second round tender he would make $2.7 million in 2018 and $4.3 million over four years. The 53rd pick, for instance, would come in at $4.2 million in this scenario. If Collins gets tendered at his original level, he would make $3.6 million over four years. The 66th pick would have made $3.37 million in that span.

Edit: ...and then there was top dawgs thread that I just saw.
