Clemson CB, Garry Peters to the Panthers

Recommended Posts

Had Peters been our 5th round pick and Mayo the UDFA, I don't think anyone would be upset.

I'm sure there was lots of whining and complaining yesterday because Peters wouldn't be available as an UDFA.

It's always easy to say 'we coulda got this guy in the next round.'

Of all the cornerbacks in this draft class, nobody had a higher CFF grade in 2014 than Peters. With standout performances against both North and South Carolina, the Clemson defensive back put up some impressive numbers over the course of the season. From 60 snaps in coverage he allowed just 26 receptions, for just 233 yards and only two touchdowns. Averaging just 9.0 yards per reception allowed, he also finished the year with one interception and 10 pass breakups, the sixth-highest number in this draft class.

So if Peters has all this going for him, why is he just a sleeper and not higher regarded? Well, one thing we picked up on from this past season was that he had a tendency to grab at a receiver if he was beaten by a cut. Most people like a corner to be physical, but he’s going to have to learn to be a bit more savvy with that in the NFL or he’ll see a lot of flags.

Signature stat: Allowed 0.62 Yards Per Coverage Snap, the eighth-highest mark in this draft class.

Scheme-dependent cornerback who is best suited to a bump-and-run or Cover-2 defense due to his length and disruptive nature off the line of scrimmage. Peters doesn't have great play strength and is a willing tackler more than an aggressive hitter, but he plays with desired competitiveness and hasn't allowed a touchdown pass against him over his last 58 targets, spanning two years. If Peters can run an average 40-yard dash and add some bulk to his frame, he has the potential to become a starter.

PFF's favorite corner:

Garry Peters, CB, Clemson, Carolina Panthers

While White and Hill impressed, it was Peters who finished the season as our highest-graded cornerback. Allowing a mere 233 yards in coverage all season, allowing a mere 0.62 Yards Per Coverage snap in 2014. He needs to work on not being as grabby with contact, something he’ll be flagged for much more in the NFL, but Peters is a rough diamond who could develop really well in Carolina if given time.

I thought the kid could have been drafted in the 4th-7th rounds.  Yes he has some problems with his hands.  I think he is 100% a cornerback and might be best as a nickel back because of his ability to get WRs off their routes.  I think the reason he wasn't drafted is probably the concerns about his hands and how often he grabs.

I tend to agree with Gettleman when it comes to liking players good at the things you can't teach.  Things like hand placement(Shaq), Setting up routes(Funchess) are correctable.  I like corners who are in position to make plays and are physical in coverage.  If Peters was more physical in terms of tackling, or made bigger plays(interceptions when in position) I think he would have been drafted.

I think best case scenario he is a poor man's Carlos Rodgers.
