Gettleman splashy trade moves a sign of things to come in Free Agency?

Recommended Posts

One takeaway from this draft is when Gettleman has the capital to do so, he can make splash moves with the best of em. First making a huge move in the 2nd round to move up 16 spots to nab a WR and again making a big move in the 4th for a O lineman.

Reason? Gettleman said when you have a lot of draft picks to work with then it gives you freedom to make these kind of trades. That makes me wonder if next year when we will be in cap heaven and have a lot of capital if Gettleman will be willing to make the splash moves.

I know what your about to say?! "Gettleman has said he builds through the draft!" Right, just like he was 100% sure he would NOT trade up, well he did... Twice. Dont underestimate that trade in round 2, that was pretty big. In free agency terms I woild put it on the same level as a Torrey Smith type signing splash.

The bottom line.. Gettleman showed he is willing to make the big splash move when hes got the capital, in this case the extra capital consisted of extra comp picks. Next year the extra capital will consist of huge cap space (yes even after we lock up Cam).

Gettleman's history says he's not afraid to bring in key free agents that aren't bargin shopping. You have to go back to his time with the Giant's, where he was the Director of Pro Personnel, where he was key to bringing key free agents that helped lead the Giants to two Superbowls.

His time with the Panthers, he's been hand cuffed by NO FRIGGING MONEY!!!!

I think the draft shows that when there is a guy who our staff, scouts, and GM like and want and his value to our team is too good to pass up, he'll make the moves to get him. He definitely won't mortgage the future, but if he has the resources available today he will pay today.
