Fun Fun Funchess! The closest thing to KB since KB.

Dave Gettleman got me last night.  He said that he wouldn't be trading up on day 2, and how important the picks are in the first three rounds. Then he trades up.  Note to self: take what Gettleman says with a grain of salt during the draft.  That being said, he must have thought that Devin Funchess was mighty important, as he gave up two picks to get him. That's two picks for those who don't seem to understand---round 3 and round 6---the second round picks that were swapped cancel each other out.

You know me, I just didn't give a poo what we had to trade (not really), I just wanted another weapon at wide receiver to desperately help this team.  Well, Gettleman deemed Devin Funchess a much needed weapon, and it's hard to argue with a 6'4", 235 lb, athletic receiver as anything but the next best thing since Kelvin Benjamin.  Both had first round grades according to Dave Gettleman, and Funchess is slightly more than three years younger than Benjamin who only turned 24 in February. Along with Cam who is turning 26 in less than a week and possibly Stephen Hill who just turned 24 a week ago, we have the possibility of skyscrapers all over the field for a long time, not to mention Greg Olsen for a "couple" of more years.

Getting back to Funchess, not only is he young, strong and tall, he reportedly ran a 4.4 on his pro day, which was a stark difference from the 4.7 he ran at the Combine where he ran purposefully slow so he'd fall to the Panthers...I am kidding. What I am not kidding about is that the 4.7 time was due to a "severe toe injury" that he suffered during the season. Funchess arguably is similarly sized and just as fast as the much desired  Dorial Green-Beckham, but without all the baggage.

Gettleman covets versatility as can be seen by his drafting of Shaq Thompson who can play OLB, RB and Safety. Devin Funchess has already alluded to the fact that we may just move him around.  Perhaps he will play WR, TE or H-back. Versatility is a nice option to have on both sides of the ball because it can facilitate mismatches which should help the Panthers execute more effectively.

Listen to Bucky Brooks talk about the Funchess on the video

Well, guys, I didn't think it was possible. Admittedly I didn't even really scout Funchess like I should have because I just figured he was the poor man's kelvin Benjamin, but like Brooks and others have said, Funchess can be every bit the threat that Benjamin can be.  We have two legit threats at WR.  We have two HUGE threats at receiver.  Proehl obviously got Benji out of the gates quickly, and I expect him to aid D-Funch (no, I didn't make that up) in a similar manner.  We've seen it done, Huddle. And now we are going to see it times 2.

Cam for MVP will be what they're chanting next year.

Cam has averaged about 20 TD passes and 3500 yards a year in his career. People have an unrealistic expectation of what QB's need to do to win MVP these days so I feel like it's doubtful. But if we can have a sustained offense like his rookie year and he can get 30 TD's, 4000 yards and limit the mistakes, I think he can certainly be in the conversation.

More importantly if he does that with this defense, I think we win 11+ games and take the division again.

What I love most about this pick is..... Dave  Gettleman! Unlike Hurneys BPA strategy this man has a plan! We just went from no receivers for Cam to throw to, to Dave Gentleman making our receiving corp so scary that it influenced Atlanta's next pick! That is a legit GM folks! Dude is thinking 2 and 3 steps ahead!

Not to mention he had garbage ass wannabe QB Gardner throwing him the ball. I was bummed about the pick at first because of how much we gave up, but now after I have calmed down for the day and realizing we really didn't give up THAT much, I couldn't be more excited. And people were making it sound like Funchess was slow as molasses. I went to see his highlights, he has respectable speed.

EXACTLY

he's by no means a burner, but he's not 4.7 slow either. he's about low 4.4 high 4.5. He's got the ability to catch over every pat of the field and his catch radius, body control, and ability to box out players is insane. He needs to get a little tougher, and round out certian elements of his game, but he can honestly be an Alshon Jeffery type player for us

Yeah I was skeptical of picking Shaq in the first, but now that we got both Shaq and Funch, I can justify in my mind that Funch was a first rounder anyway (and he really was on some boards before the Combine), so it all evened itself out because we quite likely would have had to move up for Shaq in the second.

Is passing yards and td the only thing you're using in your breakdown? ?

The offense scheme could be reason for the passing TD'S. . When you run it in from the 10 to the end zone.. It takes away from the passing TD'S. . Especially when you use your QB as the short yardage Back as well. .

I want to see Cam be the prolific passer I know he can be, 4200 yards and 25 TD passes and all that poo. It's better than the 3 yards and a cloud of field goal offense that St. Louis is apparently going to be playing this year.

But in order for that to work you need weapons. Or to be Tom Brady. So far in Newton's career, his second option has been Legadu Naanee, Brandon LaFell, Brandon LaFell, and Jerricho Cotchery. In other words, his career no.2 is basically the horribly mutated abomination from the every 90s commercial ever video:

Every-90s-Commercial-Ever-6.jpg

I didn't think any receiver past the second round could be a reliable enough pick to have a shot at contributing immediately. Also, I felt like all the good picks were going to be gone by 57. I know now looking back that Jaelen Strong probably would've been there because he fell to the third but the draft is a fluid, ever changing three day spectacle with so many moving parts, and so many people wanted us to trade up anyway, I don't know why people are so pissed that Gettleman just happened to be on the same page with them once. At the end of the day I was quoted as saying I prefer Gettleman address WR in the first two rounds, and I meant it, and I didn't think it would be too much to ask for given the depth of the position in this draft, and that's exactly what he did.

Gettleman's a really good football evaluator. I've been saying it for two years and I'm glad he's running this monkey farm (I hope someone gets that reference) because I really don't think the last GM we had could frankly lace his fuging shoes when it comes to that area. And yet people continue to question literally every move he does like it's their fuging job, because their hand picked guys got overlooked. Guess what, it's the draft. You put all your eggs in 8 players' baskets and it's very likely we don't pick any of them for a plethora of reasons, whether we weren't in the right position to draft them or they didn't make the grade. You're just setting yourself up for failure. I told you guys there would be surprises and that Gettleman's not going to be synced with forum favorites, and that the guy he does pick probably didn't have his name echoing in here the last two months or so.

The guy spent hundreds of hours working full time watching film, working players out, vetting them on the mental side of football, following up on scouts that are also spending hundreds of hours doing the same, etc, so that he could find the best football players with the resources he was given, that, at the same time, could provide a function that the team could make use of. And you figured out that the best players of the draft for us were so-and-so because you watched Mel Kiper spew a bunch of football clichés out of his big giant flat head, and certain things resonated and you fell in love with a limited selection of prospects and forgot who everybody else was. Trust the guy.

I'm fully aware of Cam being a goal line running asset. And the numbers I said weren't a knock on him, they were saying where I think we could see him regularly in the future.

Actually I see a Mike Evans. More athletic passive than aggressive strong player. Take a look at the measurables comparison of Devin and Mike.
