Panthers trade up to 9th pick of second round - select Devin Funchess

Dude, give it up. He bought the Athlons and the USA Today Draft Guides at Publix, so HE KNOWS WE OVERPAYED FOR OUR PICKS.

Game over, man... game over.

Aliens was one of Bill Paxton's most underrated performances.

That and True Lies.

I hate giving up picks. I like Funchess, but it's hard for me to know that we could have kept our 3rd, taken Jaelen Strong in the 2nd, and taken Carl Davis with our 3rd. That would have really given us strong depth at DT. Our backup DTs are getting OLD.

The intent was never to use all nine picks. By acquiring two comps that were untradeable it gave us an opportunity to trade picks if we wanted to.

At some point last year we started nine or so rookies. Folks forget how young this team is, and with all that youth making impacts on the roster, the less we need a glutton of picks. Just no room on the roster.

As was mentioned earlier in the thread, this draft seems to be about acquiring that which we need going forward to compete on a higher level. Needs that we had pointed out on this board all season. A second receiver across from Kelvin, and a Chancellor-esque rover in the defense, among other things. At the end of day, there are still four picks to play with in the rounds that have proven to be in the Panthers wheelhouse recently.

Gettleman even said in the Funchess presser that drafting 9 guys and then signing all of them would have been dicey.

People keep saying we gave up three picks for this guy just to make the deal sound worse. I don't know why they can't see the 2nd as a wash.

Agreed.

But the 2nd wasn't a wash, it was a significant *gain* since we moved up so far.

Somewhere in this thread is the comparison of trade point values, comparing the value of the pick we got to those we gave up.

We won the trade.

Laugh out fuging loud

Your ego is enormous. You're some random dude on the internet

And he was a P.E. coach before somebody that knew somebody hooked him up.

So, just because people haven't been employed in the NFL, that means they don't have an eye for talent?

Who gives a poo?

I liked him as the president in 'Independence Day'.

Wait...

There's a hidden bit of insight into Gettleman's philosophy in that statement.

The fact that this was a concern tells you that he expects and wants all of his draft picks to make the roster.

That's a lot of confidence in - and importance placed on - the right picks.

That was a lot to give up.

I think I miss non-reaching gettleman, lol.

I would've thought strong would come off the board before funchess did.

We apparently just don't see football the same. We still have the slowest receiving corps in the NFL. I just don't get it.

With what G-Man was looking for, we could have traded out of our #1 & got Shaq Thompson (probably without moving up in the 2nd, but if we did move up...take where we took Funchess), then Funchess in the 3rd (maybe giving up another pick or so to be sure).  It seemed like a reach.  Anyone know if they thought DGB was still available at that time?  He went right before I think...that would have made sense to me.

Thirty years ago.

Since then, he's worked his way up from scouting intern to scout to personnel guy to general manager.

In the process he's been part of six Super Bowl teams, three world champions, and the best two season stretch our team has ever had.  Not to mention he was one of the authors of the game plan that the Giants used to beat the up-to-then undefeated Patriots in the big game.

Comparing that to random internet guy is just ludicrous.

Come on, man.  You're smarter than this!

You're perfectly free not to like the pick or the trade, but some of the arguments you're using to justify it are just terrible.

I've moved on from it for the most part, so I don't hurt the gettleman fan club's feelings by disagreeing with his moves... But ultimately, that's the biggest issue I had with it.

I said when we took Shaq, that it's likely he would've been there much further down... We likely could've traded back at least 7 picks to possibly the early second round, got Shaq, and picked up another pick to use to trade up again where we could've taken Devin Smith or Funchess.

We don't know this, but honestly, neither does any gm out there... They only have an idea of what teams are looking at which players, but like Shaq said, he could've went anywhere from 20-50,and seeing how he started slipping in many projections (much like we saw with Clemmings now), that's where I have my issue,in that we could've given ourselves much more maneuverability if we traded back for shaq and picked up another pick.

But oh well, it's done and that's who we have. No room for dissenting opinions, so let's all fap.
