Panthers trade up to 9th pick of second round - select Devin Funchess

Very happy with the pick and I don't think we gave up too much in the trade. As soon as it was announced we moved up that far I said we had to have given up at least a 3rd.

A 3rd and 6th is very fair, and we still have 7 picks total in the draft. Anyone unhappy with the trade up just think, if this was Hurney he would have given up a future 1st.

astute observation

h-dog did in fact give up a first to move up in the 2nd and get everette brown in 2009

Looks like we might have been able to stay put and still get Strong

We likely could have stayed where we were and gotten the guy we got. But we gave up a very valuable 3rd to move up.

Gettleman may well be an above-average talent evaluator, but he's below average at overall draft strategy. If most of your peers and the media think a guy is a 2nd or 3rd rounder...don't take him in the 1st. THAT's when you trade up in the 2nd.

Who in front of us at 57 was even going to take Funchess? None of those teams needed WR and many of them actually went WR in round 1. Why not wait, and if you're wrong you take Strong or your BPA? Why trade multiple picks for someone it wasn't even clear others were contemplating?

Hopefully DG is right on these evaluations, but my issue is his overall draft strategy. You can't completely ignore what everyone else (your peers and the draft "experts") are saying about a player - if you do, you can end up drafting players at the wrong time.

A nice player picked about where he should have been at 41 but our 57th, our 3rd and our 6th for him is insanity.

I really think with Shaq and Funchess Gettlemen may be guilty of tunnel vision and not looking at the big picture.

I don't pretend to watch enough college ball outside of Stanford to have any informed opinion on any of these guys.

So I have a checklist I go by to see if I agree with a pick:

Are they big? Yes, he is

Do they have a cool name? Close enough.

Do they have dreads? Dammit no. But hopefully he'll grow some out.

Will he be fun to play with in Madden? You bet your ass he will.

So this kid checks out for me.

Haha!

One more...

Does he wear a visor? No, dammit!

Jaelen Strong is about to fall into the 3rd round, dumbshits.

Hmm so Jake fisher fell to 21, we picked 25. So you're telling me we could have moved up 5 spots giving up less than what we did and possibly draft Strong in the 3rd?

To say that he has done nothing when it comes to OT is wrong, when the 3 guys that will be competing for the two spots are guys who weren't on the roster at this time last year.

And back to back division championships for the first time in NFC South history should earn him some trust with the fanbase. But i guess not...

You're right, he has done something. He pushed the best LT in franchise history out the door after a pro bowl season and has tried to fill the hole with dollar store signings and Byron Bell, meanwhile not investing a single draft pick, late round project or otherwise.

Nothing in his history has shown me I should trust him to protect a franchise QB, even going back to the Giants.
