La'el Collins Agent: Draft Him Now Or He Won't Sign

Recommended Posts

This is not how it works. If players could negotiate their own terms out of college, none of the big names would enter the draft.

Undrafted guys are also on a rookie wage scale and enter into restricted free agency until they have 4 years of accrued service. That means if you sign a 1 year deal, the team can tender you for 3 more years. Furthermore there is exclusive rights free agency in which you basically take the league minimum and no other team can make an offer. I'm not sure when and how these classifications would apply but the point is he would be making very little money for the next few years.

Non guaranteed NFL rookie minimum salary is the most a team can give during the UDFA stage and each team is given a pool of money that can be used for UDFA signing bonuses (roughly 90-100k)

So really only point of making the demand is to try to move to the 2016 draft. Doubtful it works out for him, but all he has to do is not sign a contract and he'll get moved to the 2016 draft.

Either he is doing this because he is guilty and wants a decent contract now or he knows he's not guilty and will be a 1st rounder next year. Tough to say what to think.

So much for dreaming of him coming to the panthers as a UDFA.

This line of thinking does not work if he's guilty. The team that drafts him is not obligated to offer him a contract. There would still be an onus to prove innocence before the team signs him. The pay would be locked in if the team signed him but they are not obligated to sign him.

I dunno, I had no inclination one way or the other before.  This stunt makes it sound to me like he's innocent.  I mean if he were guilty and desperate for a payday, he'd take whatever he could get.  Not signing and then being found guilty gets him nothing, which is a lot less than a 4th-7th round pick gets.  Not signing and being innocent protects his future.  The police asked for him like 1 or 2 days before the draft, that's not plenty of time the way the law works.  They're not going to expedite their investigation or question because Collins has a draft to get to.  I'm not saying I think he's guilty or innocent, but this play seems to indicate innocent to me.
