La'el Collins Agent: Draft Him Now Or He Won't Sign

Recommended Posts

I think I like your idea better. If he doesnt get picked in rounds 2 or 3, he should try to withdraw from the draft process and then try to find the team that would give him the best chance to start and sign a cheap one year deal and hope he balls out and earns a big contract next year.

I think if he could do this he would be taking less of a risk. I dont see him going any higher next year a year removed from football then he would this year.

This is not how it works. If players could negotiate their own terms out of college, none of the big names would enter the draft.

Undrafted guys are also on a rookie wage scale and enter into restricted free agency until they have 4 years of accrued service. That means if you sign a 1 year deal, the team can tender you for 3 more years. Furthermore there is exclusive rights free agency in which you basically take the league minimum and no other team can make an offer. I'm not sure when and how these classifications would apply but the point is he would be making very little money for the next few years.

Either he is doing this because he is guilty and wants a decent contract now or he knows he's not guilty and will be a 1st rounder next year. Tough to say what to think.

So much for dreaming of him coming to the panthers as a UDFA.

This is what I was wondering.  I guess my next question is if he plays well can he be tendered the top contract offer, or is he stuck.  It looks like there is no out for him at all in this process.

Here is a reference. Undrafted free agent cannot be offered more than the league minimum. The only contract negotiations revolve around the signing bonus.

After the seventh and final round of the draft, teams will switch gears into full-on recruitment mode. While late-round picks are obligated to show up to the respective camp of the team that drafted them, undrafted free agents have their choice of situations. While teams can't offer more than a non-guaranteed NFL minimum salary, each team is allotted a pool of signing bonus money for the process.

I do feel bad for this guy if he's completely innocent. But something tells me he's not

At this point, I have no feeling whatsoever for his guilt or innocence. Very little is known about the situation, far too little, I'd say, to make any kind of informed opinion.

What I do feel like I can say with some confidence though is that his agent is a dumbass for putting this ultimatum out there.

Who knows, but I don't think his behavior has been that of someone that is innocent and heartbroken over the murder of his ex girlfriend and attempted murder on his child (allegedly). In fact, his behavior to me seems like that of someone who is desperate to get a payday before someone finds out he had knowledge of it.

I have no idea whether he did or not, but he just seems to be acting awfully shady. If he's innocent, this absolutely sucks for him. But, if, there's just something fishy about it all.

So let's say he signs a 1 year undrafted deal for league minnimum. After the first year he becomes an exclusive rights free agent.

Exclusive-Rights Free Agents (ERFA)

An Exclusive-Rights Free Agent is an NFL player who is not under contract, but has only two years of NFL experience. If his former club makes him an offer at the three year veteran minimum salary, then that's it, he has to take it or leave the NFL. These guys have no right to negotiate with other teams. They are "free" only in the sense that they're free to quit.

Ok. So after three years accrued he could be tendered, a 1st round tender would pay him $3m. A 2nd round Tender would be $2m.

Quite frankly an exact comparison would by Byron Bell's earning over the past 4 seasons.
