If you meant he was wrong for not spending money we didn't have in FA, and instead was shrewd in picking up guys like Remmers, Norwell, and Philly Brown who have all played well for a fraction of the price of a FA or early round pick, then I guess he was wrong in the best way possible.

 

he just won't overpay if he doesn't see the value.  all the "duh" FA signings and picks that we didn't pursue?  it's because the asking price (whether it's picks, cap commitment, whatever) didn't line up with the value assigned to them.  i think history will show more hits than misses.

 

as for the 2014 OT market, veldheer was about the only one in that class with an asking price that we could have afforded and whose production backed it up.  his cap figure jumps way up in 2015 to boot which would have made him a no-go anyway.  collins doesn't have a job right now and guys like albert and saffold were way out of our price range to begin with.  you could maybe make a case for donald penn too but he was just brought in to oakland after they bungled saffold and expectations were low for him.

i love a lot of things about this site

but if there's one thing i can't stand it's the number of people who act like they know what it's like to be in the 99th percentile of athletic talent in the united states and preach about what they'd say or do if they were the 25th player off the board in the NFL draft.

that and idiotic snap judgments based off little information. It's crazy how so many people have not been educated to do their homework before coming to any kind of firm judgement, especially when you are judging a person. Another think i liked about that non-fluff piece on Gettleman is how he calls scouts that think they know a prospect after watching a very limited amount of film by the term "IEs" (Instant Evaluators). He's basically calling them idiots

I just hate we took another linebacker, especially when we are in the nickel something like 70% of the time. The value of a 4-3 linebacker just isn't there either unless the guy is a Kuechly/Willis-level talent. And if we're moving him to safety, wouldn't Landon Collins be better?

None of the teams ahead of us took a linebacker, but we - the team with the best LBs the game - felt it was worth it. I just don't get it, you can't win every game 10-7. I understand there were no OTs left, but there were several top receivers still available. Now it's only Smith and Strong, both of which I'll be shocked if they're still available at 57.

D.G has more football knowledge in his gnarly fungus ridden pinky toe then any of us on here. He selected a three headed monster to help anchor both the secondary and LB corps for years to come and possibly plug in as a RB if needed. With Luke,TD, and Peanut helping this kid....he will excel.

Technically he's not just a linebacker. He's a Swiss Army knife with a little safety and running back mixed in with it.

7-8-1 with a tough schedule and winning the NFCS while playing a poo ton of rookies and second year guys and a QB that played on one leg and a broken back with no offseason. Yeah, again wrong in the best possible way.

Greg Hardy deal made sense at the time as it kept a pro bowl player on the team but had no long term commitments in order to make sure we can re-sign guys like Cam and Luke.

No one knew what was going to happen with Greg.

Well why do you assume Gettleman was wrong?  I think Gettleman probably thought that too, but he is just trying build the team for the long haul, so he understands that part of being a good GM is filling the lower half of the roster with people that allow you to keep taking the BPA.  Thats the only way to have sustained success, and thats why most teams in the league ride the roller coaster of having good and bad seasons.

 

Because we ended up 7-8-1, Cam got killed most of the season, and our receiving corps proved to be what the football world thought it was going to be.  But like I told teeray, the 2014 season is dead, rotten and forgotten.

 

You're right about most teams, but I would rather be like the top tier teams who are in the playoffs more years than not, and whose bad seasons may be 9-7 or 8-8.

 

I have given G-man the benefit of the doubt with his other top picks so far.  I am just skeptical about this one. Hopefully we can get some legitimate offensive weapons later in this draft.

 

Justin Hardy and/or Deandre Smelter would make me feel a lot better.

More importantly than that.. at the end of the year last year, I really think we were one of the best teams in the league..And that was in spite of all of the positions that people are criticizing Gettleman for not upgrading.

 

Its pretty amazing what you can do when your GM finds good fits from the lower half of the roster.  If you are looking for instant gratification, you are going to ride the roller coaster of having a good season followed by a bad one.

Shaq Thompson is going to give us great versatility this year. He can cover TE's much better than AJ Klein. Klein got burned last year several times. You know an oppossing offense will have a hard time blocking everbody, because if they can't, Thompson is going to blow some poo up. Calm down! Think about how good our defense is going to be now. It's nice that Luck has all these weapons, but their defense can't stop anybody! G man has 8 more picks and there are plenty of good WRs and O lineman left. I trust in Dave.
