You can be humble and say you believe you're a first rounder. He could have said, "I believe in my talent and I knew in my heart I was a first round talent. I know some teams might not view me as high because I've been labeled a tweener, so I just have to come in and work hard and prove that I was worthy of being taken in the first round"

This sounds just like FA last year and the draft last year after the 1st round.

Stoked to see what Shaq can do in this D.  He is going to be a real Weapon.  One of the best overall athletes in this draft, being taken under the wing by 2 of the best LB's in the league.  And coached up a former LB.  

I could really see him take some heads off blitzing this year.

Before I drank some of that snake oil that Gettleman was selling last year, I was of the opinion that Bell and Chandler were shaky at the very best, and I was also of the opinion that our wide receiving corps was extremely uninspiring and lacking. Well, I hate to tell you, I was correct on both accounts.

 

Everyone shared that opinion.. you arent special for thinking that.  And reaching on players or over spending in FA to fill those needs wouldnt have helped us long term.

 

As for the people making a big deal about Shaq not expecting himself to go in the first round.. I guarantee he was just trying to not set himself up for disappointment.  It has absolutely nothing to do with how he views himself. He is just not arrogant enough to ignore what others are telling him.

I know that it was a 'fluff' piece and likely didn't mean crap but the article on panthers.com the other day about DG's draft mentality matched up a lot with what scouts said about Shaq. The specific position traits are secondary to the football player. Obviously DG saw the athleticism and the versatility as things that couldn't be taught while the bad hands or lack of ideal position were something that could be coached.

I understand the talk about not needing a LB and I personally was all in for a WR but I think that so far DG has proved thus far that he is a far superior talent gauge than any huddler so I back the pick and I can't wait to see the 'new' Shaq rip up.

the other thing about that 'fluff' piece (which wasn't fluff at all, was a pretty humbling and honest piece) was how much teams value a guys character as a football player and that teams grade that (the character needed to be great in the NFL). Shaq obviously scored very high

                                  Post Draft - "Why did we draft this guy? He's too small! What is Gettleman thinking? Season over."

                                  Day of playoff game - "Awesome pick! I'm glad I was wrong! Gettlemagic."

Best Player Available is the philosophy that you can rank the talent in the draft and you go with whoever's at the top regardless of their position when your turn rolls around. The top 5 prospects are typically set in stone. You can make the argument that 5-15 are pretty much universal. BPA is completely subjective past the halfway point in the 1st round.

 

I had to get that out because half of the Huddle acts like we shouldn't debate about Shaq at all because he's God's BPA.

Who said anything about "special"?  My response was to a thread directed at me.  

 

Anyway, I doubt that everyone shared that opinion, but for argument's sake even if they did, then that just means that "everyone" was right, and Gettleman was wrong.
