Yes, Shaq was indeed the BPA

every pick from 20 to 50 was graded the same.

Per league sources, NFL Draft has 16-19 top players; "20th pick same as 50th pick"

It gets dicey trying to figure out who the BPA is from that group and you're going to get a ton of disagreement on who it is. That is why each team decides on 1 person beforehand to make the final call. Those guys are called GMs.

I don't think Shaq is a bad player, I just think it was a bad pick. I've tried to talk myself into liking it, but it doesn't help when the guy says he worked out for the team but never thought he was going in the first.

Do I agree with the Pick? No......

Do I Trust G-Man, Yep... and here is why

What if some freak accident happens and Keek or Davis get Injured? Now what? Oh Wait, we have a top notch LB to take the spot now. When Davis retires in 2-4 years, we now have a replacement with experience. Also, we have WR weapons at this time, just need work on OL. Im sure next year, there will be plently of OL and WR to choose from. Im sure most of you didnt think KB was a great pick either.

What if Kelvin gets hurt week 1? I can play that game as well.

Then we trot out Cotchery, Ginn, and Corey Brown in three receiver sets for the remainder of the season. I'm sick of the "next year" talk to finally get serious about building around our franchise QB. I'll eat crow if the next several picks are all on the offensive side of the ball but I'm not getting my hopes up.

It's called humble. 59 is also humble and he's the best LB in the league.

It's both.  I acknowledged that he has the in with certain brass, no complaints there.  And I think many posters were ready for something like this to happen and don't see a crazy amount of overreaction.  Just saying to tone it down with the, "Yep, my inside sources are right" deal.  I never criticized in the build up...I make threads titled "Cheese Goggles"/  Just don't find a need for an overflow of these type of threads.

Dude, Gettleman ain't giving up a thing, and neither are those in his employ.  He is tight-lipped and demands that his people be tight-lipped as it pertains to his big board.  Don't believe the hype!  Most things (if not all things) about the Panthers can be garnered from reading public sources.

this is driving me crazy...he was BPA and adds to a foundation of a truly hard defense to plan for...I like a great defenses, we made to the big dance one year on D. Having a fast and tough D that can adjust will be a beautiful thing to watch...and the crowd can get into it on third downs.

and this one pick is not a Newton killer, the offense will have the rest of the draft to find some gettlemajic...the list of good receivers going in the 4th/ 5th rounds is impressive.

So welcome aboard Mr. Thompson, you're going to love it in Carolina.

Just don't buy a futon....

You guys are a trip. Are any of us former GM's and if you ARE a former GM you're no longer employed opinion no longer matters, lol. I'm happy with the pick, we have 8 more picks to address T, WR, DB, etc. Find your chill.

I mean, the team has prospered since then, but I'm not sure if Bruce Irvin, he of the 16.5 career sacks, is even a top 10 reason why they've been so good. People were also really confused when the Eagles traded up in 2010 and took Brandon Graham over Earl Thomas. That one didn't really pan out. Usually confusing picks are confusing for a reason.

I would be 100% on board with the Shaq pick if I thought there was any chance of the Panther drafting La'el Collins (assuming they did enough due diligence to determine that he wasn't involved in the murder of his ex.) We all know that won't happen, though. I don't think the Shaq pick is a bad pick, just a little odd, but their board is their board and by know we all can expect them to take the top name on that board in the first round. Not all of us are going to see players the same way the FO does. I would like for them to end up with Collins and Tyler Lockett after their next two picks; that would make me a very happy camper after three rounds. Solid chance that both those guys are off the board by the time Carolina's third rounder comes around though, not to mention that Collins is a pipe dream with all the heat on him.

you lost me at Collins dude. Do you know anything about this organization?

You can be humble and say you believe you're a first rounder. He could have said, "I believe in my talent and I knew in my heart I was a first round talent. I know some teams might not view me as high because I've been labeled a tweener, so I just have to come in and work hard and prove that I was worthy of being taken in the first round"

Sounds much better than I just never think the best is going to happen.

I know that it was a 'fluff' piece and likely didn't mean crap but the article on panthers.com the other day about DG's draft mentality matched up a lot with what scouts said about Shaq. The specific position traits are secondary to the football player. Obviously DG saw the athleticism and the versatility as things that couldn't be taught while the bad hands or lack of ideal position were something that could be coached.

I understand the talk about not needing a LB and I personally was all in for a WR but I think that so far DG has proved thus far that he is a far superior talent gauge than any huddler so I back the pick and I can't wait to see the 'new' Shaq rip up.

Shaq knew he was in that 20 to 50 class and only a random 13 of those 30 were going 1st R depending what the GMs decided. He was just being realistic. I prefer people rooted in reality
