CBS' Prisco hates the pick & SB Nation's Kadar, lukewarm

B- from SI.com: http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/04/30/carolina-panthers-select-shaq-thompson-2015-nfl-draft

The Panthers got a lot faster and better in their linebacker corps when they took Luke Kuechly in the 2012 draft. Thomas Davis had already been an impact linebacker for the team since 2005, but he hasn't always been healthy, and his current contract has voidable years in 2016 through 2018. One thing's for sure: If the Panthers can field a trio of Kuechly, Davis and Shaq Thompson, they'll have the league's most athletic linebacker corps.

Thompson is so rangy that some teams projected him as a safety, though he's ideally a Will linebacker in a 4-3 with outstanding pass-coverage potential. He can also sub in at running back, as he gained 456 yards on 51 carries playing on the other side of the ball for the Huskies in 2014. You could argue there are more urgent needs for this franchise—receiver, offensive line, cornerback—which make this pick a bit curious.

Let's take a look at prisco's writeups on prior picks:

2007: Draft as a whole, dwayne jarrett, lol

Best pick: Getting receiver Dwayne Jarrett in the second round will prove to be a steal. He plays much faster than his 40 time.

Questionable move: Using a fourth-round pick on 5-8 receiver Ryan Robinson, who is really just a return man.

Second-day gem: Sixth-round pick Tim Shaw was a quality linebacker at Penn State. He’s a little stiff, but in the sixth round he makes sense.

Overall grade: B+. Their first three picks — Jon Beason, Jarrett and Ryan Kalil — were outstanding. If fourth-round pick Charles Johnson can help the pass rush, this will really be a special draft.

2008: Draft as a whole, stewart, otah, godfrey, etc

Best pick: Third-round pick Charles Godfrey played corner and safety at Iowa, but he might be better suited to play safety in the NFL. He has a lot of range for that position.

Questionable move: A lot of people will question trading their 2009 first-round pick and other choices to move back into the first round to take tackle Jeff Otah. I like it, but it will be questioned.

Second-day gem: Fifth-round pick Gary Barnidge, a tight end from Louisville, is a nice receiving tight end who will help the Panthers passing game.

Overall grade: B-. As much as I like top pick Jonathan Stewart, don't the Panthers have far greater needs than a running back?

2011: Newton

This is a pick that will define this franchise for the next 10 years. It could be feast or famine. Big risk.

C

2012: Kuechly

I love this kid as a player, but didn't the Panthers have other needs? What about corner? Even so, I like it.

B

2013: Lotulelei

The Panthers hit this one by having Lotulelei fall to them. He fills a major need. I like it.

A-

2014: Benjamin

They had to get a receiver, but I don't like this pick. He is second-round talent in my book. Why not Marqise Lee?

Add Shaun King to the mix ... Panthers are the biggest Day 1 Loser ... 'Doesn't know what Dave Gettleman was thinking' ... if they wanted to go LB, better players were available.

Time for the Homers to hate ... analysts know nothing ... fans know less ... OUR GM is the only person on this planet with football knowledge.  Same group that was defending Hurney and every move the Panthers made.  Not saying Shaq is a bad player but even he was surprised to be picked on day 1.

"it's good to be king"

I put it this way... When we first picked Luke, I didn't like it because we had Beason but of course we see how that turned out(By the way, Love Luke). I trust the GM and coaching staff. They haven't let me down on talent the last few drafts. Our defensive players love this pick, seems like he will be ready to contribute Day 1. I didn't know much about this kid so right now at work, I am watching his youtube highlights and reading up on him. He seems like a solid pick. Im excited.

I think it is a good choice.  TD is getting older and will be available to mentor his replacement.  Gman would have taken the tackle they had on the board if he hadn't been picked at 24.  I do have faith in Gettleman's ability to sense talent.

I hate to say it, (i really do) but its going to be D line. Eddie Goldman or Owambe Odigizaga

I agree. It could also be Landon Collins or Jaquski Tart if they are still on the board.

Defintely Odi if he is there. If the Panthers want Odi they would need to trade up to the early second round.

As for everyone who wants offense, you will get it. There are quite a few quality #2 WRs to be had in the mid rounds and some nice OTs like Daryl Williams, Tyrus Thompson, Sean Hickey, and a dark horse I like in UNLV OT Brett Boyko (played QB, DL, OL and stand up LB through HS and college).

As for WR, seems like they are eyeing Dezmin Lewis, Chris Conley, and Ty Montgomery in the mid rounds.

The Ty Montgomery pick would be interesting. He would add to WR and RB (in 3rd down and option packages).

If the Panther can snag TE Jesse James later in the draft, I will be thrilled.

Josh Robinson/Ameer Abdullah/John Crockett, Ty Montgomery, Jesse James, Chris Conley/Dezmin Lewis, and an OT and I will be happy with the Panthers offense. Cam Newton will be thrilled too. 5 more picks offense and 3 more picks defense.
