I feel like I should start a WR thread even though it's still early.

OK round 1 is over, but most of the top guys are gone.  If you believe the hype, then either Devin Smith or Jaelen Strong is going to be the next WR taken.  What are the chances that they last until pick 57? I think slim and none. And, Gettleman already said he is not moving up on day 2. That being said, there is always a chance of a fall, but I wouldn't bet on it. I began listening to all the negativity here regarding different prospects, even though my eyes said something different, so I thought that maybe there was a chance for Agholor, Perriman and Dorsett to make it out the first round, and maybe even to us. Not!

Somewhere in a past OT thread (can't look it up right now because search/content is suspended), I alluded to the fact that there may not be any receivers worth second round grades after the higher profile guys were gone (and I didn't even necessarily include Devin Smith).  Well it's a little early yet, but I'd be surprised if more than four receivers are drafted during the second round, and one of the ones that I was thinking might be drafted in the second, Sammie Coates, the Panthers didn't even work out as far as I know.  Being that the Panthers reportedly have never drafted a player that they didn't work out, and Smith is likely going to be gone at 57, as well as Jaelen Strong (to Philly more than likely), then I just don't see us drafting a receiver in the second.  I mean we could draft Devin Funchess, but he may be more raw than some of the others, plus he may translate to a TE. I am thinking Preston Smith, Carl Davis, Tevin Coleman or Ty Sambrailo (yes, Fisher will be long gone) in the second (even if Smith or Strong are on the board knowing Gman).  That being said, people need to perhaps lower their expectations regarding us actually drafting receivers in the second round, if not day 2 altogether.

The good news is that you can still have the great expectation that some of these less heralded receivers can actually come in and be legitimate threats. I still believe that Justin Hardy can do some damage if we are lucky enough to draft him.  Who knows, maybe Gettleman has given Hardy a third round grade (he gave Shaq Thompson a first), or Hardy could quite possibly last until our pick in the fourth.  But even if Hardy doesn't last, there are still receivers like well put together Ty Montgomery and fast little Tyler Lockett who could not only add some life to the receiving corps, but also add some punch in the return game. Michael Johnson out of Delaware, the receiver mentioned by FBGP (Em Hunt) is an explosive return man and WR as well (but I am sure people may question the competition). The same can probably be said for Tre Mcbride out of William and Mary.

And even if Gman is not looking at the production of Hardy, or the versatility of some of the others, there are still guys who may make most of their living playing opposite KB. Let us not forget about Kelvin Benjamin's smallish buddy, Rashard Greene who could be undervalued just like Hardy and Lockett in my opinion.  We also worked out the combine wonder that is Chris Conley and 6'4" Dezmin Lewis.

Two intriguing guys that I have mentioned before that may make a name for themselves are Josh Harper and Deandre Smelter (who may have been talked about with the top tier guys had it not been for an ACL).  I believe that both of these guys could be legit.

Basically, there may still be some quality receivers available yet, though they may be smaller than we may prefer, or less polished than we prefer.  Even Smith and Strong need some work.  I could be wrong, but I just don't think Gettleman is going to rubber stamp the receiving corps as presently constituted. I must admit that I am not necessarily optimistic about day 2, but day 3 should bring some more solid competition.

Crazier things have happened than Smith or Strong slipping to our 2nd rounder. The 2nd round is where a lot of crazy stuff happens. Teams start to panic and reach for needs and let better prospects slip. I think we're well positioned to come away with someone who fills a need, be it a WR, OT, DE, CB/S, or RB.

Well, hell, if a position of need (WR, OT, DE, CB/S, or RB) isn't filled with that 2nd round pick, then the football gods must be trolling the hell out of us. That, or Gman is filled with way too much hubris.

i think you need to reexamine the player we drafted last night and rethink this statement. Shaq Thompson is a OLB/Safety

I was using CatalystNX's own words to make a point, but, to your point, I have listened to a few analysts, not to mention Gman himself, refer to Shaq as a weak-side LB.  He wasn't drafted to play safety, and that's not what Gettleman apparently envisions for him.

even as a WLB, he makes this team better.

I curious to how many wr do you think Carolina needs? I could see either Lockett, Hardy or Diggs being selected in the 3rd round.  But looking at our roster we added Boykins and Hill is going to be ready.  Think we are going to be set at WR.

13 Benjamin, Kelvin WR 6-5 240 24 2 Florida St.

11 Bersin, Brenton WR 6-3 210 24 2 Wofford

15 Boykin, Jarrett WR 6-2 218 25 4 Virginia Tech

16 Brown, Corey WR 5-11 180 23 2 Ohio State

12 Brown, Mike WR 5-10 200 26 3 Liberty

82 Cotchery, Jerricho WR 6-1 205 32 12 North Carolina State

19 Ginn, Jr., Ted WR 5-11 185 30 9 Ohio State

87 Hill, Stephen WR 6-4 215 24 3 Georgia Tech

83 Lucas, Marcus WR 6-4 220 23 1 Missouri

10 Presley, De'Andre WR 5-10 190 25 1 Appalachian State
