ESPN's Analysis of Our Pick, And Why I Feel It Was The Wrong Pick

No doubt, it's probably more my preference talking than anything else... But having seen all three play out of Smith, Strong, and Lockett, there is a huge drop-off after from Smith and Strong to Lockett... HUGE.

My deal is that it's a faux drop-off based on media ratings.  There's legit receivers past them with a higher floor and higher ceiling.

That doesn't reinforce the Shaq pick, which I won't lie about..I wary of....but this class is mid-round heavy.

I agree Diddy. I'm frustrated and share your sentiments. This defense will need to hold opposing offenses to 15 PPG to have another shot at 11-5/12-4/13-3. My biggest worry is a couple broken plays against our defenses or quick turnovers by the offense and a 14 point lead early will be a hole too big to climb out of against even an average defense.

Can't wait to see how this defense handles Luck +TY Hilton + Andre Johnson + Phillip Dorsett + Dante Moncrief + Frank Gore + Coby Fleener/Dwayne Allen when they come to Charlotte on Monday night.

This times 10000000. It's my opinion that d is more important than o, but for fugs sake give cam some fuging help we are ruining his career. He would be a top 5 qb hands down with the colts weapons. Defense can only get you so far and it only takes one mistake to give up 7 points that take the O 5 drives to earn

The way I look at it: We just made our defense elite.

If we got one of those WRs: Is that really different for Shula compared to a Dezmin Lewis/Locket/Bell/etc.?

Huge difference. Shaq barely adds anything to our d(which btw is already elite and if u think Shaq is going to be what makes it elite you know nothing about him). Meanwhile are offensive consists of KB, stew if he can remain healthy and Newton. A new wr would help way more than a guy that was good, not great, at three positions in college. And if you don't agree you are just being stubborn. I'm not even sure why he was given a first round grade tbh

Here's my problem with waiting to address WR until the mid rounds: Our roster is already littered with #3/4/5s that have been journeymen and JAGs their entire careers. This team needed a number two and an instant difference maker. A mid-round rookie isn't going to be that. At least not his rookie year.

Another year of Cotchery as our #2 across Kelvin is a scary thought. It's bad when your starting QB is probably the fastest offensive player on the roster outside of Ted Ginn and Philly Brown.

Great minds and all, OPFIM...

It sucks, and that's why I think I'm a bit more sour about this pick. A guy that fit the need was sitting there in Dorsett and he was taken four picks later after we took Shaq. So, they can't say it would've been a reach. Dorsett, from what I saw was listed above Shaq on all the TV draft prognosticators' lists. And now, as I've said, to me, there is a huge drop off from Smith and Strong (who still could be a #2 for a lot of teams), to Lockett. Sad part is, we could take some random WR from southwest central Arkansas technical state in the 5th, and he most likely could still be our #2 even if he sucks as a pro, because Cotchery is that bad on the outside. Whereas, Dorsett, Smith, or Strong could've been the answer long-term at #2, imo. Now, none of them are attainable, unless we give up a ton tomorrow, which Gettleman has already ruled out, lol.

I don't hate our WRS as much as u guys.

Tackle is a little suspect. Remmers showed promise on right side. Left side I am worried about.

But Ginn and Brown both have good speed. Benji doesn't have great speed but is a playmaker. You have to think just sheer experience will make both Brown and Benji better

We still have 8 picks to go

With Olsen we will mostly only play 2 WRS and occasionally 3.

O-line fixes a lot of our WR "problems"

I just am not as down on our WRs as some of you. My main worry is o-line

I think a healthy Cam would beat Philly on a foot race

Um how about when we get back to back winning seasons for the first time in our history. Gettleman is extremely lucky the NFc south is on the decline right now

"He's luck hte NFC South is on a decline while we get better."

????????

I gues Andrew Luck is Lucky that everyone in the AFC South sucks then. But ya'll can't ge tthe Colts GMs nuts out a'll mouths.

I'll shut right up about WR if we can land Devin Smith or Strong tomorrow even though I'm not a huge fan of Strong. He and Smith are the best of the rest. I really don't have any emotion towards the Shaq pick tonight. He's a playmaker...good athlete, versatile. But Dorsett is a world class athlete at a dire position of need and offers a skill set nobody on this roster even comes close to possessing. I'll probably like the pick once the season gets going and he makes plays but every time Luck hits Dorsett for a 50+ yard touchdown I'll just be shaking my head when we are running vertical routes with Cotchery, Ted Ginn, and Corey Brown.

I knew I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up for Dorsett. Really thought he would be a perfect fit here.

After round 1 of the draft tonight, who has a receiving corps comparable to ours?

Panthers and Browns may have the two worst groups of WRs in league.

Crazy thing is other teams are STILL drafting WRs and have a better corps than us to begin with. Ive never seen a QB as good as Cam get so little help. Winston already has a better group than Cam, you could argue Derek fuging Carr has a better group. Hell the Jets have a better group. It's unacceptable.

I know where you're coming from. I'm scared to death knowing I have more faith in Oher, Remmers, and Jon Martin at tackle than I do Jericho Cotchery and Ted Ginn as #2 WRs.

And that's my thing... I'm not bitching because we didn't trade up and take Kevin White... I'm simply saying we have went into the last two offseasons with the same problem, which was our biggest problem by far and we have only added one legit, bona-fide WR. After that, we have a roster full of 3s, 4s,and 5s... And yet, going into this same need for the second year, GMan turns around and signs defense like we had the greatest show on turf on offense already, lol.

The defense is already super strong and yet, he seemed to concentrate on it and continued to ignore WR. At this point, I'm not even asking for a superstar, I'm just asking for something... Someone who can contribute immediately... That's all. A guy who has a legit shot of being a #2. Not another Cotchery, Avant, or Bersin... It's just unbelievable.

We'll see what happens tomorrow, but this was the exact same argument many of us were rattling off last offseason and throughout the regular season... It's what ended up almost eliminating us from playoff contention and then once we squeaked in, because our division was historically bad, we were knocked out relatively easily.
