McGinn's writeup on Shaq

Recommended Posts

The thing that gets me, if we were so enamored with him, we could've traded back and picked up another pick in the process. The only team I'd see gambling on him outside of us would've been New England.

25 was a huge reach.

Sounds like KB last year.

Shaq makes our defense dynamic. QBs are going to struggle with him in coverage, he reminds me a lot of peppers but he plays OLB. This guy is going to learn from the best and be one if the best in a few years.

Sounds like KB last year.

From what I recall, KB was almost universally and unanimously going to us in 99% of mocks out there prior to the draft. Plus, we had ZERO talent at WR going into that draft. He was projected where he went and we had no choice.

Shaq wasn't even projected in the first by most pundits and he doesn't have a natural position. With as bad as WR is for us, if we took a WR, whoever we drafted at 25 would've stepped in immediately as our #2 and made huge contributions. Instead we took a tweener that lacks instincts without a true position on an already loaded defense.

If he was the BPA, we must not have offense on our big board for the first round.

From ESPN:

How he fits: Defensive coordinator Sean McDermott can play Thompson at linebacker when he goes to his nickel package, as he often does, and line up Thompson at safety in run-heavy situations. Thompson should also strengthen Carolina's special teams, and he could fill in at running back in an emergency. However, Carolina has more pressing needs, and Thompson doesn't have a natural position fit at the NFL level, making him significant reach at this point.

Fixed.

Reach for need is not going to happen with this regime. Sounds like the talking heads who called this a luxury pick.

Mel Kiper needs to reach for a comb and a head shape specialist! This pick proves the "talking heads" are just that! Gettleman knows football and understands Value! The guys sitting on the side know names!

A "reach" is when you reach for positional need. Clearly Shaq doesn't fill an immediate need, therefore he cannot be a reach. If there's any doubt that he was the BPA on or board then it needs to be removed quickly. You don't make a pick like this because you're reaching, you do it because he's your legit BPA.

From ESPN:

I don't know about that. I remember hoping we picked KB but I was thinking there are so many directions we could go. A lot of people thought he was a really raw prospect and didn't think Gettleman would pick a guy that couldn't contribute right away.

No. We couldn't have

There was two trades in the first round. Two.

No body was going to want to trade up.

Can keep up with TEs better than anyone else our defense.

Umm, have you seen TD vs Jimmy Graham or any other TE for that matter?

Shaq is gonna have to ball to be better than TD.

I'm not putting that on Shaq right now. Dude is a rookie.

Really? You're going to cite ESPN as a legitimate source? ESPN? The place where Mel Kiper went on a massive rant when we took Cam Newton because we already had Jimmy Clausen? That network? Where Skip Bayless works? ESPN? Yeah I'll take that opinion seriously. I also think the Hornets are going to win a championship next year and the Saints will win the South for the next 10 years.
