Round 1 - Carolina Panthers Select Shaq Thompson

Jeremy Igo

TD one year left. Max.

My fear too.  I think TD may have just announced his replacement.  I know there was talk about TD and the Panthers working on an extension a couple of weeks ago but then we heard nothing more.  Might not be anymore to talk about after this pick.

I said "meh" in the Draft thread. I stand by that. Kid could be great, but I think it was a reach for the first round. Could've traded up in the second or hell ... maybe got him in our regular spot. I hope he turns out to be a superstar.

No debating needed with this post, but ask yourself this: had we not had a thread on the kid and had he not had that dinner with the FO ... how would you have felt about us picking him tonight?

Why is it a reach? Because you have never heard of him?

The "east coast bias" is very strong regarding athletes and isn't limited to the NFL.

I'd much rather have Shaq than Jaelen Strong or Breshard Perriman.

Not a fan of the pick, but I also didn't like the Beason or Luke picks at the time.

Would've really really liked Landon Collins.

This. I don't like the pick and I feel like Collins is a much better SS. But I also didn't like the the luke pick at all. Just have to give it time. Although I did think luke was a great lb. I can't say the same about Thompson. I think he has good instincts but neutered himself by playing three positions.

Thompson is so rangy that some teams projected him as a safety, though he's ideally a Will linebacker in a 4-3 with outstanding pass-coverage potential. He can also sub in at running back, as he gained 456 yards on 51 carries playing on the other side of the ball for the Huskies in 2014.

We just drafted a LB, S, RB and a ST'er all with one pick. Not mad with the pick.

not sure where that emoji came from...

Better be fuging drafting a WR tomorrow no fuging excuses or Dave better get his fat ass out there

There's plenty of OT and WR left. Both pretty deep this year. I'd love to see Devin Smith get selected by us tomorrow.

With that being said, it also wouldn't surprise me to see DG pick a d-end like Preston Smith in the 2nd round either.

When it comes to the draft my attitude is you have to just trust the guys who are paid to do this for a living and are supposed to know what they are doing.  We drafted Luke when we were were stacked at LB.   We have been puzzled before and ended up with some studs. Plus what I found interesting when they were talking about the pick, was the part about possibly grooming him to play Safety AND we need some of those.

Panthers definitely still need some play makers on offense though.

Interesting, when we picked him, Mayock was almost speechless. He audibly said, "oh..." followed by a long pause and the shortest breakdown of any of the prospects I saw.

That's pretty much how I felt.

It'll be fun to come back in a few years and compare his level of production to that of say, Philip Dorsett, taken 4 picks later.

Luck has Hilton, Johnson, Moncrief, and Dorsett.

Cam has Benjamin, Jericho Cotchery, Corey Brown, and Brenton Bersin

lol. Glad we got a back up linebacker/special teamer though.

And they'll be losing games 38-45

I didn't like the pick from needs that we had and who was available standpoint. We needed a speedy WR and there were plenty left and instead we chose a guy at a position where we are the strongest at. Even with my trust Gettleman philosophy it still has me scratching my head because there were other very good players there to help Cam who in all honesty has gotten little help over the career he has had so far. No WR on that roster is a number two receiver and there were plenty of borderline number one receiver talent still left there in my opinion.
