A look at players the Panthers might consider with 25th pick: Phillip Dorsett

Yep, Matthews and Latimer were both getting a lot of 1st round pick hype in the final weeks leading up to the draft last year.  In fact, by the time the draft rolled around, Matthews was the guy I wanted at #28.  Matthews had a very promising rookie season in Philly while Latimer was virtually non-existent in Denver last year.  Unless Latimer really steps it up this year, that "B" word is gonna start getting talked about.

You're in CO right?  I think it was channel 9 the other week that had a decent sports report about Latimer moving to the outside spot and the Broncos using Sanders primarily in the slot.  Could be a surprise in fantasy...barring them getting a WR high in the draft.

Yep, I live in Evergreen.  Been out here nine years now.

I just don't understand why we would take him in the first.  We don't need a 5'9 WR when we have a QB that throws his passes extremely high.  Dorsett is cool and all, but not on our team.

Speed trumps a lot of deficiencies. He would immediately open up our whole offense. His deep speed would make it easier for our other WR's and give them more underneath space to run routes.

Evergreen is a really cool spot.  Would love to find land down the road in the area.

That ship has sailed unless you're already rich.  Everything within half an hour of I-70 here in the Evergreen area has soared in value over the past 5 years.  I think Conifer is about to blow up due to that.  I'm trying to talk the wife into moving down that way and trying to score some acreage with easy access to 285.

Don't you think at 5'9 he would get destroyed at the line of scrimmage?

Not so much. Smitty never had much of a problem getting off the line because he was strong, coached up, and had rare explosiveness. I think Dorsett possesses the same explosiveness in his first step and Ricky can teach him technique to get off the line. Getting off the line against press is equally as much about technique as it is strength. Heck, even Kelvin struggled this past season when pressed and he's got 40lbs. at least on most corners he faced. Dorsett's speed and first-step should help get off the line of scrimmage.

Dorsett is 5'10 with a 38 inch vertical and sub 4.3 speed. Despite being a bit on the shorter side I believe he has the athleticism to win over the top and in some jump ball situations. He would instantly make this offense very dynamic in the passing game and running game if we ran reverses or some read option with him.

I'm no pro scout or anything but I see a lot wasted motion on some of his routes. Very crisp in others. But boy, does he get upfield and out of his breaks in a hurry. Looks like a gazelle out there. If anyone can teach him the art of running routes it's Proehl. I'd feel very comfortable taking him.
