Cam breaks down a play call and explains the audible.

I watched the piece.  I get what you're saying about rebranding, but why does Cam need to rebrand?  The guy has a successful clothing line at a major department store, tons of corporate endorsements, he's QB for a team that has won their division two years in a row...etc etc.  Seems like his image is fine and dandy.

When I heard the laugh track I felt the video immediately lose credibility.  I was like, really?  Why?  The interview would be fine without it.

Well there are two ways to look at it. With studio editing... its possible that people actually did laugh.. and that they just used another shot to go along with the laughter. (albeit, the wrong shot.) Either way it was a bad edit.

Endorsements don't mean that you have a good brand. Endorsements just mean that we can make money off of you. Rebranding means that we want to change the way a target audience views you so that you are more marketable in a broader sense.

So when I say rebranding... I don't mean what is Cam Newton's name on, but what do people think when they hear the name Cam Newton.

I'm not saying its a bad thing... but it IS a thing.

Any OC or QB in the NFL could diagram that whole play just knowing the play call because much of the verbiage is the exact same throughout the league, but that doesn't matter at all. It's not like the other team is ever going to hear the play call.

As for tipping a play based on a formation, we probably have 20+ plays out of that formation and it's not some big secret that we are trying to get our best WR in single coverage. That's just common sense.

The hand signals could maybe be something but changing those is not a big deal at all and happens regularly with audibles and such.

He didn't give away anything at all that matters. No need to overanalyze.

fair enough. i just think that Cam is smart enough and comfortable enough at public speaking to give dummy signals during an interview; signals that will mean absolutely nothing to an opposing  defense come September.

actually i viewed all of that as Cam just being Cam. he seems to be joking around and having fun with Patrick and the audience. Cam specifically says in that interview that he's not trying to be Peyton or Brady. He is just trying to be Cam Newton. and i think Patrick is just asking Cam to comment on his colleagues. there's nothing wrong with that. Patrick doesnt deride Cam or even compare him that much to the others. he is just bringing up discussion points for Cam.

again i think this is the wrong way to interpret the interview. Cam was asked a question he could have answered in any way possible, and Cam chose to poke alittle fun at himself and his colleagues. it didnt have the feel of "Cam you should be more like the greats" to me. but maybe its just me.

with respect to when he mentions the play calls, i will say the same thing i told EightyNine above: i just believe Cam is too smart to give actual play calls on a national radio program when asked to relate something about NFL schemes. and if I remember correctly, Cam didnt bring up the play calling, Patrick did. Cam gave general answers. yes with specific names, but who knows if they are real? Cam is a great public speaker and improv artist. for all we know, he made every single name of those plays up.

Wiz, we both think that the other person is looking at this the wrong way. i dont feel like Cam has to apologize to anyone for anything. i dont think Cam feels like he has to do that either. you seem to think Cam does think that way, and it colors the way you interpret what questions are asked of Cam, and how Cam responds to those questions.

in short, i just think Cam is being himself and having fun, and doing a great job protecting the integrity of the Panthers' gameplanning in the process. if you disagree, thats fine. to each their own. pie for the video though! :)

You're a good guy. I like how you spinned that in a positive.

I like for King and Country too... pie for pie.

honestly, as someone who has never had experience with marketing or rebranding techniques, i couldnt tell that there was a laugh track in the back ground. and it doesnt sway me either way. ive watched all the clips at grahambensinger.com and throughout the interview, you can see that the audience is engaged and is having fun along with Cam. laugh track or not, the audience doesnt need rebranding techniques. Cam is so personable and honest about his life and his struggles and successes that the audience cant help but to laugh with him, express interest and approval with their faces, and applaud him when appropriate.

i guess what im saying is that the laugh track made no difference for me. the audience wouldnt have seemed hostile without it. they were obviously engaged and approving. the laugh track doesnt lessen the credibility of the interview.

thanks Wiz. i try hard to be optimistic. haha. as for my member title... i love the band, but im not actually referencing the band with the member title. I love the United States of America, and as part of my religious beliefs, i believe She has a King, whether She chooses to recognize Him or not. He is my King and i live my life for Him and thus... For King and Country. :)

Seriously, the play call is not remotely sensitive information. Every team knows what the hell your formations and routes are, you have to execute them even when the defense knows it's coming.
