This is Cam's year to silence a lot of critics

Horrible logic.

I think the phrase "horrible logic" is being a tad bit too complimentary, being that it implies that logic of any kind was used in this analysis. Delhomme? Really? If Cam had Smitty and Moose in their prime, for his wide outs there would be no comparison n

Horrible logic.

Wins and losses, in the end, that is really what matters. Is Cam a better football player than Collins and Delhomme? Without a doubt he is!

He just needs to show this year that he has what it takes to bring the team into the winner's group. Until then, he really isn't a franchise QB, he hasn't earned the title. You don't become a franchise QB by being a marketing miracle, but by winning games and  giving your team a chance to compete at championship level.

He has not lived up to that, yet. Yogurt, Gatorade, Under Armor, Belks, NFL Play 60... hey, it's cool to see him in commercials. Pro Bowl appearances look great. Good management and marketers can get you those things. Super Bowl rings take wins on the field.

I believe he has it in him. I really do. We just need to see him lead a team to the promised land, yanno?

And this is the year the team needs to see it, or we're looking at giving a big, fat contract to a guy who might never get us a championship. Phillip Rivers, Matt Ryan, Donovan McNabb, Jay Cutler ... the list of the almost was guys is pretty long. I want Cam to be a Hall of Famer, with multiple Super Bowl rings for us.

But we need to see something concrete, real soon.

Ron Rivera and Dave Gettleman have already said Cam is the franchise quarterback.

do I feel Cam is a franchise quarterback? He proved it this year. He flat proved it.

Better than Jake ever was. He will get his wr help this year in the draft.

I loved Jake, he had heart and soul and helped lead the Panthers through our most memorable season in 2003. But if he had the same weapons or (lack there of) that Cam had to work with the past 4 seasons, I don't believe there would be very many fond memories of Jake.

Yeah, it is Cam's year to show everyone. I've watched every one of his pro snaps, just like everyone here. He's a phenomenal athlete, charismatic and has everything it takes to be a QB.

But...

He's got to win and he's got to win in the playoffs, or we're looking at Michael Vick (minus the bad publicity) all over again: great athlete, should be an elite NFL QB, but never reaches the potential.

Football is a quarterback driven sport, and the only statistic that matters in the end is the Win-Loss ratio. A quarterback either wins games or doesn't.

Going into this season, Cam's win-loss-tie ratio is 31-31-1. In the same span of time, Jake Delhomme (nowhere near the athlete Cam is) posted a win-loss ratio for us of 36-25 (his fourth season was cut short three games). Kerry Collins (and no one is going to cheer him as a great QB) posted a 26/26 record his four years with us (only 4 games in 1998 -- all losses).

Playoff wins and losses for them for the first four years here are:

Newton: 1-2

Delhomme: 5-2

Collins: 1-2

Rushing, passing, all other stats aside, if we aren't winning, it doesn't matter. If we aren't striking deep into the playoffs, we're basically the Cincinnati Bengals.

Right now, historically Cam is neck and neck with Kerry Collins, another guy we thought was a franchise QB. A QB with Cam's skillset should be way ahead of Collins at this point in his career. He should have won more games.

So yeah, this year, Cam really needs to show everyone. He needs to make that leap and pay off the hope we've all invested in him. You can blame injuries, coaching and the quality of other players as much as you want, but Collins and Delhomme had the same issues. It's time for Cam to rise up and at least soar above Collins.

He's got much more work ahead to match up with Delhomme.

I pretty much couldn't disagree with you more.  Football, more than any other major sport, is a team driven sport.  Not a single position driven sport.  Win-loss ratio is completely and utterly irrelevant when judging a single player.  A team either wins games or doesn't, not a single player.  Cam was so far ahead of Delhomme and Collins in just his rookie year it's ridiculous they were mentioned in the same breath.

Do you really think Jake was even close to the athlete that Cam is? I don't.  Jake didn't have Cam's arm, his running ability, his height, his college career or his charisma.

2003 was magical, and that team was terrible on paper, but they had heart. Peppers was the only star on the team going in. 2005 was a team with a better look on paper, but was decimated by injuries... we were down to what, fifth or sixth string running back by the playoffs?

I'm just saying that I hope that Cam can live up to his potential this year, take the division and lead us to a championship. A quarterback of his pedigree should be able to provide the necessary spark. Win games, compete for championship.

At a certain point, you have to prove it. Excuses only last for so long.

So in his first two seasons the argument was "statistics don't mean anything without wins!".

Now that the team has won back to back division titles, and had back to back playoff appearances along with a playoff win, it's "well he's still not a franchise qb though...".

Oh the huddle...
