Gettleman: 4-5 Left Tackles in draft, good chance we get one, WR class has more depth in later rounds

Ian Wharton of Optimum Scouting did a piece on Humphries titled: "Florida's D.J. Humphries Has Potential to Be NFL's Next Franchise Left Tackle"

it concludes: "Overall, Humphries may not be fantastic as a rookie lineman. But as his career progresses into his second, third and fourth year, he should bloom into a star at tackle."

"Humphries has a chance to be a starting left tackle, Day 1, at the next level," NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah said on NFL Network's "Path to the Draft." "I don't know if I can say that about any other offensive lineman in this class. It's very deep, but (Humphries) has the best feet of the bunch."

Scherff, Peat, Flowers, Collins, and Ogbeuhi.

I don't think he meant Ogbeuhi because of his back problems. He said they want long term starters in the 1st, not guys who could be out of the league in 3 years.

I agree with this. If we go tackle at 25, I hope it's Humphries.

Some of those "4-5 left tackles" could be later round guys that they project as potential LTs in a year or two. There might not be 4-5 first round left tackles ready to contribute early this season.

What I was thinking. I've seen a couple mention Laurence Gibson as such a guy.

Mayock on this year's OL class:

April 26

Q: "I've heard so many different opinions on the offensive line class. .. is it strong, weak, what?"

Mayock: "Good question. As far as the offensive line class, let me put it to you this way. After Brandon Scherff, who was a tackle at Iowa and is going to get kicked inside and will probably go in the first 10 or 12 picks, after him, there's an awful lot of question marks.

Now, it doesn't mean there's not a lot of talent, because there is. But I could take, for instance, Ereck Flowers, D.J. Humphries, Andrus Peat and T.J. Clemmings. All are gifted first round tackles, but I can poke a hole in every one of those kids, either from a technique perspective or an off-the-field perspective or whatever.

So what's happened this year is that after Brandon Scherff, and some teams like Cam Irving, who could be a center, the kid from Florida State, but as far as the tackle group is concerned, man, they've been pushed down a little bit in the first round, not because of talent, but because they're not all ready to play day one.

For instance, the reason I have La'el Collins as my No. 1 tackle is because out of that whole group he's the only one where I bang the table and say ‘I think I know exactly what I'm getting. I'm getting a starting right tackle that can kick inside and play guard, but I'm getting a starter day one and he's a body mover, I know what I'm getting.’ All those other guys have question marks, and I think they're getting pushed down to the second half of the first round."

on his Big Board released yesterday, Mayock grades the OL:

8. Brandon Scherff, OT, Iowa

16. La'el Collins, OT, LSU

21. Ereck Flowers, OT, Miami (Fla.)

25. D.J. Humphries, OT, Florida

26. Cameron Erving, C, Florida State

28. Andrus Peat, OT, Stanford

33. T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh

39. Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon

40. Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State

52. Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&M

82. Daryl Williams, OT, Oklahoma

As highly touted as this staff covets Shaq, if one of those 5 LTs are available at #25...thats who we're going with imo.

If Shaq is available at number 45 or so, wouldnt be surprised with a move.

I know we're looking for a #2 WR and a RB, but this is a draft where we can move around a bit to get the ones we want by bundeling picks.

Its gonna be a really active draft for us. We may only draft 4 players in this entire draft.

Gettleman said you have to be patient (when picking at #25) and "hope teams ahead of you make mistakes."

Mayock on Apr 26, talking about the Lions picking at #23

"I think when you're at 23, you've got to let the board come to you a little bit and see what's available... When you're sitting there with 23, and I think what they (the Lions) really need is either D-line or O-line...Where do you have the highest rated defensive tackle at that point..versus who are the offensive tackles on that board when it's your turn?"
