Shaq Thompson profootballfocus #most overrated player.

All I know is I YouTube his highlights and the video I saw consisted of about 80-90% of him running the ball as a RB. As someone else mentioned here, Jack of all and a master of none. This would be a Hurney type pick through and through

Don't watch YouTube highlights then?

I feel better about Shaq Thompson at 25 than any of the OT prospects at 25.

I just don't feel like we have any solid day 1 contributors that can help at LT that will make it out of the top 10 or so.

And rule of thumb, never trust an Alabama DB in the NFL

8. Shaq Thompson , S/LB, Washington

People have been in love with Thompson's athleticism since he was a five-star recruit coming out of high school in Sacramento. However, all the athleticism in the world won't make up for poor instincts as a linebacker, and Thompson has yet to show he can make the necessary reads for the position. His 7.3 run-stop percentage was 41st among 58 draft-eligible starting inside linebackers, and he was an overall ineffective player against the run, outside of forcing and recovering fumbles.

Thompson's skill set translates better to safety, as he was smooth in coverage and has nickelback experience, but it's hard to feel comfortable picking a player early for a position you've never seen him play.

Have to agree the guy has bad instincts and is a chase and run down from behind type LB. Then all this talk about safety...Just don't see it. He is a tweener who is a jack of all trades master of none type guy. Even his sparq rating was only average while so many hype up how athletic he is. This is not the way to go(in the first) DG. Sorry about the title..he was number 8 on a list of ten.

This shocks me and reminds me of how poorly I evaluate potential. I have been stating the opposite.

note that PFF rates Thomas Davis 3rd-worst OLB in the NFL (#35 of 37 OLBs) with a 3.7 run-stop percentage. What does that say about TD to you knuckleheads?

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/04/24/sig-stats-run-stop-percentage-lbs/

obviously that stat doesn't mean much. It could mean that other teams try not to run to TD's side of the field. It could mean we design our defense so that TD is more focused on pass coverage instead of run support. It could mean other guys on our defense make the run-stop before TD realistically gets a chance to. Etc

With Shaq, only two Washington players had more tackles than him: their 3-yr starter MLB John Timu with 109 and their run-stuffing DT Danny Shelton with 93.

Thanks for sharing, Gettlemanjack--I realize that scheme etc. has a lot to do with it, and I also realize that one player defying the odds does not make a universal truth, but this is a strong argument, because we saw TD dominate last year.

Here is a question: If he comes here, does he become a reserve RB in addition to his responsibilities as a LB/SS?

Stewart

Whittaker

Toddman

Tolbert

Thompson

As much as I would like a stud #2 considering Stewart's injury history, we could get by without one.  Still, I see us drafting a RB.

Personally, I think he would be better at SS than Harper, and as a SS, with Benwikere at nickel, we would be very stiff vs. the run in our nickel package.  How do you resist the temptation to run vs. a nickel defense?

Rivera might be a little spotty as a Head Coach come game time, but he KNOWS defense and is a borderline genius with it. He's going to have a long career in the NFL if he wants to.

We haven't busted on a defensive pick under his leadership yet(except for Lawrence Wilson). Might as well focus on what we do well.

In the first round you have two guys on your team with more tackles than you? That tells me your not even the best player on your team. nevermind in the nations elite. TD was drafted out of a need to shadow the biggest threat ever seen at that time in Micheal Vick. who's the fastest qb in our division that we play Matt Ryan? We rolled the dice and it worked out once...doesn't mean we should do it again. The guy does not have the same Instincts as TD. Again he is a project who has never had a full time position... I don't want that in the first, probably not in the second with our needs on offense. There's a reason we are the only team showing interest in this guy...unless you think Gettleman is smarter than everyone else in the league.

With the increase of TE/WR hybrids in the league, I would mind drafting a LB/SS hybrid. This could be a resurgence of the 'Rover' position. Just like in basketball, the different spots and position are starting to merge i.e. DE/DT, RB/HB, Swing OLineman. In the end you have to be a football player first, then you can find your position. Shaq is a football player.
