Final Panthers Mock Draft

Very interesting. Do you think the Panthers have warmed up to DJ Humphries as the process has evolved? Or is he still viewed as a 2nd round talent but he might be the pick based on need and lack of other options?

Seems like the consensus is there are only around 15-20 first round grades on most team boards.

My dream scenario would be walking away with Peat, Preston Smith, and Devin Smith (packaging 3rd and 4th round picks for a late second rounder to get both Smiths). Would address our 3 biggest needs with true BPA talents.

Ok folks, one week to go.

Much has changed in April, and the draft somehow seems to have gotten even more difficult to predict. I can't remember a draft where such question marks remained at picks 10 and below.

Picking a single pick per round seems pointless. As such, I have decided to give you my top 2 picks for rounds 1-3, with a few other possibilities thrown in.

Round 1

Andrus Peat - OT - Stanford - At 6'7 330 pounds this hog mollie could anchor the offensive line for years to come. This would put two Stanford tackles on the Panthers roster this year.

Landon Collins - S - Bama - Hard hitting run stuffing safety that could make Roman Harper expendable. Collins was my original first round mock selection. He fell off due to wide receivers falling to the Panthers. I think he may be there now.

Other possibilities: Todd Gurley, DJ Humphries, Eddie Goldman

Round 2

Preston Smith - DE - Miss St - Panthers liked Smith at the Senior Bowl, and we all know Gettleman loves him some defensive ends. Smith has the frame and the motor to develop with Kony Ealy as a couple of solid defensive ends for the next 5 years.

Devin Smith - WR - Ohio State - 27 yards per reception. I repeat, 27 yards per reception at Ohio State. Could be a solid #2 for the Panthers. Would be the second best receiver on the roster day 1 of OTA's.

Other possibilities: Cedric Ogbuehi, Jake Fisher, Breshad Perriman

Round 3

Devin Funchess - TE/WR - Michigan - Has been buzzing on the huddle lately, and for good reason. Many compare him to Kelvin Benjamin. Having Funchess, Benjamin, and Olsen on the field together would create a lot of opportunities against teams with smaller corners.

Justin Hardy - WR - East Carolina - Hardy has impressed every team he has met with, including the Panthers. He may have worked himself up to a 3rd round selection. Skilled player that fills a need. It doesn't hurt that he also brings a built in local fan base.

Other Possibilities: Duke Johnson, Jacoby Glenn

Yes!!! Collins!!! Yes!!!! Roman Harper and Tre Boston is not the answer! Goooooo SAFETY!!!!

I don't even want to think of that scenario.

That'd probably bring the idiotic "Gettleman wants to sabotage Cam" silliness up again.

I wonder how many of the 'need more weapons' crowd understand that a dominant defense actually is a weapon for a young QB, and oftentimes can be their best friend. Ditto solid special teams.

Defense isn't just about preventing the other team from scoring. It's also about getting the ball back in the hands of your offense. Likewise special teams is about putting your offense in the best position possible.

Ya gotta look at the whole picture.

You'll see

I don't think we'd take him until 57 or that he should be taken until then, but seriously some team is gonna go Al Davis and take him top 20.

I notice you don't have Flowers as a 1st round possibility when before you have mentioned that we like him. Is the assumption that he is gone before our pick as most recent "informed" mocks seem to suggest or have we soured on him?

I would be happy with pretty much any combination of the picks you have listed so nice work. I wouldn't even mind Funchess in the 3rd that much.

Also, when is Gettleman's pre-draft press conference? I imagine that is coming up soon, right?

    • He made some excellent throws but he always has made some excellent throws here and there. I don't know what to think, which is what I was apprehensive about. Is he going to have a decent downfield game? Because okay Legette dropped one, but someone was giving stats prior to the bye or during it where he had two downfield completions and one of them was the jump ball that is just launched and fingers are crossed that our guy comes down with it, and yesterday we saw that again. The Russell Wilson school of downfield passing.  I don't feel like that is sustainable, but at the same time you have to do Something to make the defense understand they have to defend that downfield throws. Like i said, confused.  I guess I'm going to review the game for myself and look closely at his mechanics and stuff because if he actually fixed that stuff it explains the better throws. And that has been my biggest objection, or what I see as the thing that makes or breaks his chances, that unorthodox dropback and tippy toe action and not having his feet set which limits velocity etc etc.
    • The negative Nancy in me (or objective?) says that they had a bye week to prepare for the Chiefs. However, it’s one thing to have a good plan and it’s another to actually execute it. For all the flack he’s received (from me as well), Bryce seemingly has put his head down and worked his tail off and his play is giving me hope. The first 18-game Bryce showed no progression whatsoever. He gets benched, comes back, and has shown steady progress every week he has started. I think I’m starting to see what the Bryce lovers and unconditional defenders were saying all along, and I hope he can show that on a regular basis for the sake of our QB1 position.
    • Yeah, we could still very well end up 4-13 with the 2nd pick.   I think LVR has the inside track for 1, with only a JAX team as a team on docket that could be beatable.
