Jameis Winston: I didn't steal the crab legs

A lot of college towns have places where players get free food or free stuff. A few years ago, when I had just graduated but was still living in a major-college town, I was talking with a guy who ultimately got drafted by the Panthers and played here briefly. We'd run into each other sometimes at Buffalo Wild Wings on Sundays, and my fraternity brothers and I would get a table that was beside the one several players got. Once, while he and I at a high-school game in town, we were talking about going back to BWW and he said "Yeah we always eat for free there."

It's really not a big deal.

Or maybe he should not have accepted them.

There was a 99% chance that the employee was not paying for them....therefore they were stolen. He in essence would have been accepting stolen property.

Gotta be smarter when you are a top athlete...draft coming up...and everything you do will be under a microscope,

I don't know. I have had a couple bartenders give me a drink and tell me it was on the house.

I accepted but don't feel like a thief or an idiot.

Many bartenders are allowed to give a certain number of drinks on the house.....to someone who spends a lot in the bar, etc.

Difference in a drink on the house and getting a bunch of crab legs for free.

I said that it is not that big of a deal...just that you have to know that everything you do is under a microscope. Not worth the risk.

Maybe that's because I am only one of a limited few in here who believes in not stealing and does not have a criminal record.

I worked in a grocery store way back in the day. Employees are allowed to give free items to customers, just like bartenders can give out free drinks.

It was common to give free items if there was any kind of complaint or issue. Employees were given quite a bit of leeway with this and could basically give out free items whenever they felt like it. The policy was that it's better to take a small loss and keep the customer happy and coming back.

This never even happened, but if an employee went crazy giving out free stuff all the time it would have been an internal discipline type thing. Management would probably just tell them to slow down giving out so much stuff, it wouldn't be looked at as theft or a criminal issue.
