Moving to Okinawa in July

Okinawa can be very pretty and ugly at the same time. It's one of the poorest provinces in Jp and almost as if they are treated like Japanese step children. A lot of older people also speak Okinawan. I wouldn't bother learning it because the official language is Japanese. Since you've experienced mainland Jp already, you should be good to go.

The first thing you will need is a car. If you are military it will probably be much easier to find one because of the support system. I would check this website for classified listings: www.japanupdate.com

I poo you not I owned 4 cars in two years. Two were free, one was $100 and the last was $700. People will practically give a car away to avoid paying the JCI or because they are about to PCS. Again, if you are military, your unit should be able to help you out with this. If you are not working on a base, you can still check japan update beforehand. I'm working now but I can give you more info later.

Also, the big issue over the years has been off-base incidents. There has been a handful of events that reflect poorly on our service members. Curfews and alcohol restrictions are very common in Okinawa. Air Force has it a lot better than the Marines stationed there. If given the chance, I would moved off-base. That way you won't feel trapped. Higher ranking personal will be given a much longer leash. I just saw that you are USAF JAG and at your age, you shouldn't have to worry as much as some 19 year old who is away from home for the first time (me).

I am military (JAG in the Air Force), and I will be pinning on Major within a week or so of arriving on island. It is looking like a three year assignment right now. I will be a Senior Defense Counsel while there and will be responsible for the Air Force's two Korea and two mainland Japan bases. So, there will be some travel involved.

My wife and three kids will be moving over with me. We were stationed in Hawaii one assignment ago, and we are looking forward to a tropical location again, although I hear the humidity is pretty crazy on Okinawa.

I think housing is pretty strict now. From what I have gathered, housing on base, as well as your assigned secondary housing location, must be at 95% capacity or higher before you can live off base. With my travel, I think my wife prefers being on base though. We lived on base in Hawaii and loved it.

Thanks for the info.

Anyone been? I've been to mainland Japan several times and have really enjoyed it. Never been to Okinawa though.

We have all been there through Ralph Macchio's eyes.

I spent a whole Summer down there to meet family and such. The beaches are great excpt for one a rocky one with sea urchins everywhere.

Like some said..a lot of villiages. In Naha city you get the mini Tokyo (really mini). I had the civilian immersion experience however.

My cool uncle took me to a place when I was seven to get a naked boob soap bath massage from a hot grown woman. I was all man after that day.

My mom just obsessively playing slots all day.
