Funchess and Benjamin do share qualities, mainly size (where Funchess is smaller). However, I wouldn't say that each are very similar. Benjamin will make outstanding plays that make you say "wow". I don't see that too much with Funchess. Whereas I see Benjamin as a big play number 1, I see Funchess as a number 2 possession receiver. They are exactly opposite on some things. Benjamin has sneaky athletecism, and plays faster and stronger than his numbers suggest. Funchess, despite posting low 40 times, has good athletecism according to his numbers, but plays far below them. Whereas Benjamin will catch tough catches and high point the ball (Although dropping the easy chest catches), Funchess relies on catching high percentage balls and whiffs on a lot of contested catches or high balls. He is very ineffective at high pointing balls. Whereas Benjamin uses his large size to his advantage, Funchess isn't that aggressive and doesn't use great body positioning. Benjamin is the weaker of the two in pass blocking, and a similarity is that they both need more work on routes.

 

If you even stay on the panthers, a more reasonable comparison would be a better Jericho Cotchery. That may not be a bad thing to draft, but I think there are better players on the board. People see the size and instantly look to last year's draft and compare Funchess to Evans and Benjamin. I haven't seen much of Evans to say that the comparison between the two is lazy, but I have seen way too much of Benjamin and Funchess to know that their comparison is a little off base. Lazy may have been too strong of a word, but it isn't a great comparison.

It would be interesting if we drafted Funchess. It's a pick I'd have to wait and see develop until I liked it or knocked it.

My favorite Funchess comp is a poor man's Marques Colston. Funchess is a little bigger and more athletic but has worse hands. I think Funchess will be best used in the "big slot" role which is how the Saints use Colston to try and create mismatches against the slot CB.
