Recent draft day trade "blockbusters" show just how good of a GM Gettleman is.

Over the last few years, there have been 4 teams involved in draft day "blockbusters". I knos there might have been smaller trades like a team moving up a couple spots or so but I just want to focus on the "blockbuster" type trades that occured. The 4 teams I am referring to are the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and St Louis Rams.

Often we hear about teams that mortgage their futures and trade a slew of picks for one player, we often criticize those teams and make fun of them and asking "What are they thinking? Are they insane?!" But people never really poke fun or criticize the teams that get this once in a lifetime opportunity with a slew of draft picks only to piss them away on mediocre players and as a result the team is still stuck in neutral, lets take a look deeper shall we.

Blockbuster trade 1; Atlanta Falcons trade the no 27, no 59, 4th rounder AND a 2012 1st and 4th rounder to the Cleveland Browns for Julio Jones. This is it! THIS is precisely the kind of trade a cellar dwelling team like the Cleveland Browns needed to rise from the bottom, draft good players and become contenders. So how did they fare?

Out of the 5 players they picked with the 5 picks they received, only ONE is still on the active roster, DT Phil Taylor.

The Browns win/loss record since making the trade; 20-44

The Falcons win/loss record since making the trade; 33-31

Blockbuster trade 2; Washington Redskins trade THREE 1st round draft picks AND a 2nd round draft pick in exchange to the St Louis Rams for the no 2 overall pick and RGIII.

Redskins win/loss record since making the trade; 17-31.

Rams Win/Loss record since makimg the trade; 20-27-1

When you combine the TOTAL win/loss records of all 4 teams since making the trades, it is 90-133-1. So whats my point? What does any of this have to do with Gettleman being a great GM? Its simple, Gettleman took over a team in absolute cap hell and didnt even have all 7 of his draft picks his first year out due to trades from the previous GM and so far we have drafted two studs in both KB and Star in the 1st round, other legit NFL starters such as Kony Ealy, Trai Turner, Tre Boston, Bene Benwekerie and even landed a pretty good piece in Philly Brown who went undrafted.

The combined record since Gettleman taking over? 19-12-1 with two consecutive playoff berths and two consecutive division champiomships to show for it. Meanwhile a team like the Browns can have 4 yes FOUR 1st round picks in the last two years and all 4 of them end up being complete busts. And that my friends is the stark difference of a bad GM and a good one.

I agree but not making a stupid trade doesn't make him good. Ive never punched a customer in the face. Does that mean I'm good at my job?

 

Depends on your job.  In some it takes a high level of restraint not to punch customers in the face.  Possessing that restraint makes you good at your job :)
