Justin Hardy route tree breakdown

i can see Edelman as a comparison, but he gets after DBs in the run game like Hines Ward. he is a very good blocker down field, and is not scared to come inside and crack block a LB.

In one of Igo's mock drafts awhile back I compared Hardy to Cotchery, but with better ball skills. Both similar in the sense that they're better off underneath/shorter routes and won't burn you vertical.

I think Hardy will be a good role type WR in the NFL similar to what Cotchery is. But I've seen people say Hardy can be a #2 WR and I don't think that's the case. He shows good ball skills in this game (vs Florida) like I said he has. Hardy has some big mitts (10") and works back to the ball which many don't. I just don't think he's a good fit for us.

If we plan on keeping Cotchery I just don't think it makes much sense to draft Hardy.

Cotchery is here a MAXIMUM of one more year.  His presence should not preclude us from drafting a talent like Hardy.  Hardy will be at least a very solid contributor in the NFL, I'm actually thinking he will be more.  A high end #2/slot (since these days assigning numbers is nearly pointless) guy is what I think he will become with the possibility of something much more.  I said it in another thread a while back and I'll repeat it.  I know it's slight hyperbole to make this comparison, but I see a young Jerry Rice in him, and Hardy doesn't even use stickum.  With the proper work ethic (and everything I've read says he has it) he can be a star.

Thanks man. i did see some major YAC ability from Hardy. he would juke the poo out of some guys, and leave their jocks on the ground. he also broke several tackles with power running through some guys. his short shuttle, and 3 cone numbers were confirmed with his YAC ability, but so was his 40. showed very little burst and acceleration in the open field.

Good work Kats! Interesting London asked that about Hardy, as I somehow watched quite a few ECU games during Hardy's career, and his YAC ability was possibly the first thing that stood out to me. He just seemed to always turn out something out of nothing... So, even watching him last season, I kind of hoped we would find a way to bring him in.

And I guess this kind of indicative of his YAC ability as well, but as I watched him in games, I never knew his measurables. But watching the way he played, he always struck me as a big, strong receiver. I never thought he was blazing fast, but he was definitely athletic, quick, and strong. Additionally, he looked really long and wiry to me,and his hands always stood out... Part of why I thought he was a much bigger guy than what he actually measured out to be pre-draft. I was actually shocked he was under 6 feet, as again, when I watched him and judging from his appearance and playing style, I assumed he was around 6-2 to 6-3 and 220 lbs.

Regardless, I definitely could see the Hines Ward comparison you made. He is physical and plays a lot bigger than his size... He is a scrapper and is just always making plays. Listening to Proehl's comments earlier in saying he was never big on measurables, he just wanted ball players that can make plays... Imo, Hardy is exactly that guy, and I would love to have him in the middle rounds. That would be huge value.

That being said, i still want a burner as the #2 before that lol.

I agree, Cotchery and Hardy are redundant, but not when Cotchery isn't a part of the long term plans anyway.

Besides, I think Hardy will be a much better player, and if we took him, then that would move Cotchery further down the depth chart, where he belongs.

I agree. Hardy is a safe pick given he works hard has a reportedly high football IQ and has the athleticism and production coming out of college. And a big time value in the bottom of the third if he is there. Plus he gets to have Cotchery teach him the ropes and mentor him. A total win-win.
