Your take on Affleck's performance is interesting because his version of Batman/Wayne has largely been viewed as the lone bright spot in an otherwise bad movie.

It's because I don't worship Affleck.

He is the most overrated actor, period.

I don't blame affleck for rhe very poorly written script.

My take on most all action/superhero/comic films is that the antagonist will make or break the story. The Hero won't be dying (in most cases).

I haven't seen this film yet so I'm going to try to keep an open mind. But if they fugged up Lex's character which is what it sounds like....errrrr. I hated K.Spacey as Lex because camp (G.Hackman) was great in the 70s/80s, but not now.

i.e. Age of Ultron was weak (IMHO) because Ultron was too snarky instead of just vengeful. The "trailer" Ultron (no strings on me) was great, the film version with daddy issues, not so much.

Superman 1 - Hackman's Lex (good and campy, not an issue as this was a family film)

Superman 2 - Terence Stamp as General Zod "nuff said" Note: I miss seeing this Huddle persona, that Jeremy fellow just doesn't meet expectations ;)

Superman 3 - agree or disagree, but drunk and mean Superman was the antagonist. And the fight between Clark and evil Sups is awesome!!!

Superman 4 - this never happened. I refuse to remember Reeves this way.

Superman Returns - This is the not the Lex I wanted. Rosenbaum had a better feel for the Lex character seasons 1-5.

MOS - Didn't care for Shannon's Zod. He was just good, not great.

You're in for a treat with Eisenberg's Lex.

Two words for you: Jolly Rancher.

Eisenberg as Lex was... okay. That's about the best case scenario for how I would describe it.

Affleck has made some stinkers in his time, but as an actor, and a filmmaker, he has stepped his game up. Like I said, this movie was definitely without a doubt not without it's flaws. But if you just look at it from an entertainment perspective "SPLOSIONS!!!", and remove all the nerd rage, it's a semi-decent supes movie. That's about all there is to it really.

Civil War is still three weeks away, Doctor Strange even further, yet it seems like a solid majority of people have moved on from BvS and are talking more about those now.

Probably not a good sign for DC.

BvS isn't going to break $1 billion world wide, which is the new benchmark for these types of tent pole movies.

That is bad bad bad for a movie of this nature.

Jurassic World got well over $1 billion last year. Civil War is going to lap BvS.

WB royally fugged up handing the keys over to Zack Snyder.

The fact that a Batman/Superman movie won't make 1 billion is so insane to me. It's a Batman movie. in today's comic movie world. Mind boggling. I understand people not giving a poo about Supes because he's boring as hell...but it just goes to show what a fug up of a movie it was to not break a billion.

Can't get over that.

How do you have Batman and Superman, the two biggest superheroes in the world, in a big budget, live action film together for the first time, and not make a billion dollars?

My girlfriend's son, who's a big superhero movie fan, saw it and hated it. That tells me a lot.

@Joscott talked me into going to see it this weekend...  it wasn't a total waste of time, I was mildly amused, but it wasn't a "good" movie either.

The plot was jumbled and badly put together and Lex Luthor was HORRIBLE.  Also apparently Lois has gills and Batman can go from wanting to kill you to being your best friend if you say his mom's name...  I'd probably give it a 5/10.

It's definitely a better movie on the second viewing than it is when you are seeing it for the first time with all the hype and expectations.

The only gripe I have on the second viewing is Lois Lane. I counted three separate occasions superman needed to save her in the movie. That's simply too much. Should have just cut most of her scenes from the movie and it would have cut down on run time, it would have taken away the scenes the felt out of place because of her sub plot.

overall though in the second viewing I understood or noticed more how Lex was playing both Batman and Superman against eachother and it strengthened that part of the movie for me. We also have to remember the world has only been introduced to superman 2 years from the start of the movie after what was basically a terrorist level event. How did we as a nation feel only 2 years removed from 9/11. It was a flawed movie but definitely redeemable

  • 2 weeks later...

Deadpool made nearly as much as BvS with like 1/5th the budget (actually made more in domestic totals) and Deadpool didn't even fuging get released in China, the 2nd largest box office market after the US.  Also, likely more than half the general population probably didn't even know who the fug Deadpool was until his movie came out.  Everyone and their grandma and their grandma's cat knows who Batman and Superman is.  Granted Deadpool was a ridiculously huge success for what it was... but that also shows you how much a flop BvS was.  Little ole tiny budget R-rated Deadpool basically took the two most iconic comic book characters of all time, in a team up movie no less, to the woodshed.
