I seem to recall it being a story he wasn't a captain that year and that being the likely reason. You could see JR/Fox/players, whichever has that decision, making that call.

 

I think you are exactly right. Smitty was a great player, but a roller coaster of a person.  He gave $150,000 to the victims of that theater shooting in Colo, then punches teammates.  Hard to figure out.  Bipolar would be my diagnosis.
