Would you trade Philip Rivers for Mariota?

Mr. Scot

Think this trade ends up working out badly for both sides. Tennessee is not a good football team that's just missing a qb, they suck. Rivers only has one year left on his deal and could bolt (no pun intended) after next year. San Diego is getting a gigantic unknown in Mariota

I seriously doubt Tennessee would make the deal without a pre-negotiated extension for Rivers. That would be absolutely stupid.

but but but isn't Tampa hinting at taking Mariota?

Heeeeey, maybe the Bucs trade their pick for Rivers, so that the Chargers could pick Mariota.  Just saying.

If the Chargers know they are going to LA and Rivers is gone in that scenario, and if they believe that Mariota can be their franchise QB for the next 15 years, then I don't see why they wouldn't think hard about a trade.  You get some value while you still have the option.  If I was Rivers, a move from San Diego to Tampa would be an interesting thought.  You can't get much better than San Diego, which is like a playground for the wealthy, but Tampa isn't exactly chopped liver, and the tax relief would be absolutely amazing.  Florida is a nice place to raise a family if you're not in certain parts of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Plus, he'd be reunited with Vjax, and have one of the better young receivers to throw to in the league, as well as a pass catching TE in ASJ.

Do you do it if you're the Titans?

I can see Whisenhunt wanting to this. He had to deal with Leinhart when he first got to AZ and then went with veteran Warner and had great success and made the Superbowl.

Whether it is Whisenhunt's fault or not, once Warner retired his QB situation has been an absolute mess. Het had to start three different quarterbacks in 2010, two in 2011 and four in 2012, and then three again when he went to the Titans in 2014.

If I am Whisenhunt, I will do whatever I can to get a stable QB in Rivers if for no other reason than some job security as Cyberjag said. Of course that is most likely Ruston Webster's call and not Ken's but Ruston probably could use some immediate job security also.

I'd make the trade in a heartbeat. Rivers is incredibly expensive and has probably hit his ceiling. He's good, but he's not "carry a team on his shoulders" good, even though his pay says otherwise. Compare that to the contracts for first rounders since the last CBA and it is a major markdown in costs.

Add in that Rivers doesn't want to go to LA, and the Chargers are in the running, and you're going to see him bolt (no pun intended) for the doors anyway.

Trade him to Houston (where he wants to be and where he is needed) for their 1st rounder, then trade that (or your own which is one spot lower) to Titans plus a third rounder. Everyone comes out happier.

I finally got a phone and am posting from it...still haven't figured how to post a YT vid.

typically you just copy the stuff after the "=" in the Youtube URL and post it between [yt.] [/yt.] (minus the ".")

on a phone, it could be difficult.. i have never tried to post YT's on the app

Kevin Acee thinks the Chargers could.

Time to trade Rivers if Mariota is the man

For the unfamiliar, Kevin Acee is not some guy with a website.  He's been the Chargers beat writer for several years and he's one of the better writers out there.

If he takes this seriously, then it very well could have legs, and it would make the draft a whirlwind if it happened.

No, but that's not what they are looking at.  Rivers is sitting on a pile of money, and could just as easily retire after next season if threatened with the cap or an LA move.

If I'm the Bucs, or Tenn, I'm making the call, and I'm trying like hell to make the move.  Wiz, and Lovie are re-tread head coaches, and are both coming off of losing seasons.  We all know how long coaches have in this league to field a playoff team, or head back to the OC/DC box.  Not to mention the limited lifespan on GM's these days as well.

Lovie loves his vets, and they have a fantastic duo of pass catchers, and a D that could make some noise.  Wiz has coached Rivers before, and Rivers excelled under him.

This move makes a ton of sense for Titans and Chargers.  If I'm calling the shots within the Titans org, I'm not letting Telesco off the phone.

Yes, as long as they can hold onto their first round pick. Rivers is getting some age on him. They are currently on a rebuilding mode. So get a guy who could be your guy for the next 10 years. Not an aging QB who's contract expires here shortly anyways.
