Apparently we have bees...

The HVAC guy got here first and he was going up... I asked him if the landlord told him about the bees, he said "what bees?"  and off he went downstairs... lol

Guess the landlord forgot to mention it... but, turns out, no bees... at least not that the HVAC guy saw.

then it was likely just a swarm that decided to go on a field trip... apparently a hive will leave the nest on occasion, but can generally be found within a 100ft radius

Hives leave the nest with a new queen. When hive gets overpopulated (usually around 50,000 bees) queen would give birth to another queen. New queen would take 20,000 bees with her and will look for new home. When bee give divides, they usually fly only few hundred feet from the main hive and scout bees look for new home. When new home confirmed, bees will fly to new location to settle in.

That's why so many people capture the hive, you get the queen, another 20k bees will follow.

When I was a young lad, I was walking through the woods with a friend of mine and we heard this buzzing sound that got louder and louder. All of a sudden it was over us and it was a swarm of bees that was enough to block out the sunlight. They never bothered us and stayed well above our heads but WTF was that about?

Migrating hive.

You got very lucky, if one bee decided u were a threat, u would get attacked by 20k bees at the same time.

My German Shepherd got killed by a migrating hive when I was 13. I was at home watching TV when I heard my dog crying outside, I look out of the window and my dog was being attack by the whole hive... I took water hoes and start spraying my dog with water, I cut leash and drag my dog away... He died within 5 minutes in my hands. He got stung over 1,000 times in matter of 1 minute.

Apparently hive divided and 20k+ took refuge on a tree branch where my dog was chilling. My dog start barking at it and hive attacked.

The Bug-N-A-Rug guy came and said there were a bunch of dead ones up there, but nothing like a hive...  he sprayed some and left...  No bees...

WTF? Really? That is terrible.

We were actually riding our bikes and got off and knelt down. The bees were up near the tree canopy so they never got close but we really couldn't see the sky as they flew past.

Years later in the same woods we dug up an yellow jackets nest and that didn't end nearly as good.

Once I buy my house I'm going to start bee keeping or getting a Galapagos turtle.

I have been keeping honey bees since 1996 so I have some experience with them. I have never hear of " migrating " honeybees. Never. And swarms do not attack you either unless you start maliciously fuging with them.

You've suddenly became a lot cooler.
