Greg Cosell: Todd Gurley "arguably the #1 prospect in this draft"

when you talk about players for a living you're going to be right and wrong a lot. it comes with the territory.

Which is why shouldn't carry any more weight than anyone else. He's always had trouble when judging players transitioning to the NFL. He's much better when grading current NFL players.

I am normally one of the guys despising drafting a RB high but in this case I REALLY like Gurley over a lot of RBs that have came out the passed couple years. I think watching Lynch and Murray lately has got my interest back in the position too.

I really like Gurley but what concerns me is that we need our first two picks to be on the field making an impact Day 1. I think it would be detrimental to the season, and not to mention Cam Newton if we take an offensive player and he's not making plays until week 8.

Maybe we can afford that luxury since we do have Stewart. And lets not forget that when Stewart is healthy he is easily a top 10 RB.

Is it better for our offense to take Gurely. Wait for him to come back while Stewart and Fozzy handle the load(which is risky in itself). While possibly missing out on a top WR propect, even an OT or DT that would make our defense insane.

Or is it better to take a healthy WR in the first. Give Cam a new weapon to pair with KB, Olsen, and Ginn.  Take a healthier RB later in the draft to back up Stewart and watch the offense go.

And I'm not trying to underestimate Gurley. I understand that he may be the next AP. But we will he be that by the start of the season? Cam is in contract year. I just think taking Gurley is taking a gamble on the rest of the roster to pull through without an immediate impact from the 1st round.

Carolina would be the perfect place for Gurley. Wouldn't have to start right away but could ease into the rotation. I am not sure if he would be a better pick at that point than Goldman or Thompson if they are still around. I like other possibilities better but would fine with Gurley or Gordon.

I like Gurley a lot, but ACL injuries are still scary.  Sure, they're not as dire as they were a decade plus ago, but it's still a very significant injury.  A lot of guys come back just fine these days, but some are never the same.

The concern I have is that Gurley doesn't seem to be the most durable guy out there and with his running style he takes a pounding.  That's a worrisome combo.  I get the Adrian Peterson comparisons.  Gurley is huge, fast, and runs hard as hell.

It's also worth noting that when Gurley went out, UGA's rushing game didn't miss a beat.  Last year, Gurley had 123 carries for 911 yards for a 7.4ypc average and 9 TDs.  Nick Chubb had 219 carries for 1547 yards for a 7.1ypc average and 15 TDs.  That's virtually identical production.

Speaking of UGA RBs...

Here in a couple of years, watch out for a kid from my hometown.  B.J. Emmons is a beast.  He's heading to Athens next year.  Best player to come out of Morganton's Freedom HS since UNC's Leon Johnson.  Emmons was better in HS than Leon was and Leon held the ACC's all-purpose yardage record from 1996 until C.J. Spiller finally broke it in 2009.  He's still #2.

Just a shoutout for a hometown kid.

Jamarcus Russell as a physical specimen was probably the greatest QB prospect of all time. There were stories of him when he was sixteen at like Manning Nike invitational camps just blowing pro scouts away with his arm talent. He basically went to a coach that let him go nuts (Les Miles), then he was drafted into a hideous situation in Oakland, and on top of that the closest thing he had to a parental figure died. Here have a fun young picture of him.

Richardson has some physical limitations as a runner, but the stories that have come out about him pretty clearly indicate his problem is attitude. He just hasn't adjusted to not being the most athletic dude in the room anymore.

Well, he should carry more weight since he spends all day watching coach's tape and knows what he's looking for.

Some random guy at Goldman Sachs has definitely picked more loser stocks than me, but that doesn't mean we have equally valid opinions on things.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
