Mumford & Sons: Wilder Mind - Terrible change in direction?

Mumford and Sons has made a change in direction that is straight up baffling, I understand if a band wants to try their hand at something different. But this is just is suck a departure from their first two albums it saddens me.

Babel was a fantastic album, but now we have this:

Believe is just terrible, and the Wolf isnt bad, but it's not the genre of music I want to hear when listening to Mumford and Sons.  they sound more like U2 now, and I dont like U2.

M&S was always overrated to begin with... my wife absolutely despises them and I tried to defend them for a long time, but everything they've released up to this point sounded like every other song they released.  maybe that's what they realized too and that's the thought behind the new direction

this is the first i'm listening to any of the new stuff... but I saw all over facebook that people were up in arms about the departure of their sound.  I honestly think it's not bad... much better than the monotonous stuff they've released on their last two albums

I retract my previous statement a bit... the first song (is better than the first) sounded more like KoL... that second song sounds like good 'ole M&S, just without the banjo.  if they'd actually learn to play their instruments instead of just strumming the same chord really fast over and over again, they'd be much better

I've never been a fan of Mumford and Sons. Every time I heard them, all I could think about was how The Avett Brothers already did this 100x better, years earlier.

That being said, Marcus Mumford is a very talented dude. If you watch the documentary "Lost Songs: The Basement Tapes Continued", you can really see Marcus trying to get away from the same, tired M&S formula.

He even out right says something along the lines of, "I don't want to make the same song over and over."

So I'm not surprised at all they are trying something new. I haven't even listened to the new stuff, but I hope they follow it and don't return to their old sound just for the sake of it being safe.

I've always said that The Avett Brothers worked for years building the formula and then M&S swooped in and just copied it and cashed checks without having to put in any of the grunt work

i actually really really like it. believe could be a U2 or a coldplay song but i think they're doing what they have to to move forward as artists. you can't just play banjos and sing about being from rural england and never progress beyond that or people are ultimately going to get tired of your stuff.

i actually dig it.

i loved their first album. didn't listen to much after.

i agree about them kind of swooping in on the avett bros. but swooping in on other talents and cashing checks has been done since the beginning of the recording industry so i dont really care. led zeppelin was stealing music from day 1 and they're widely considered the greatest rock n roll band in history. i mean "heart like a kickdrum" and gap commercials? don't be too snobby about this new sound.

marcus mumford is a really good dude and very talented too.

Talk about a band that has lost their sound

Overrated = I'm not a fan of that type of music.

I loved M&S before this current album that is about to release. there is nothing wrong with banjo's and strumming an instrument if it makes great music.

their old stuff was fantastic. to me this new album would be like Jay Z doing Country music, not only should it never happen, it's down right terrible.  if I wanted to listen to Coldplay/U2 poo I'd listen to them. but with M&S I want M&S not whatever this crap is.

at least I know the Avett Brothers will never let me down in this regard.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
