Has there ever been a draft for us as wide open as this one?

except that the concept of BPA makes every draft equally wide open.

That's true but I think the bold moves this offseason (Graham to SEA and everything Chip Kelly has done) lend creedence to the feeling that equally bold moves could happen in the draft. It seems pretty solid that TB takes Winston at #1 but the #2 pick is a complete mystery because of potential moves. That move alone could spark a dramatic change in how the draft unfolds. The uncertainty about who gets Mariotta and where is what has this draft in a position to be a wild ride.

I agree that the draft as a whole is a crap shoot, and will be exciting to watch. The title specifically states 'for us' though. Every draft is a complete unknown with the BPA philosophy.

Last year it was a bit clearer to me at least that we wouldn't be going after DL in the first round and that we would be looking to WR/OT as RB wasn't considered 1st round worthy. This year, we're being equally linked to WR/CB/DL/RB/S/OL. In my mind that makes the first round far more open than at least the last two drafts, regardless of BPA.

BPA means that you target a player, not a position and do not filter your choice based on your current roster.  Therefore, we wouldn't be linked to any position in any draft, just particular players.

If, BPA is the choice why do fellow always assume that a Defensive player is BPA over a Offensive one?

OT in the 1st !

the reason BPA works so well is because the NFL roster is a very fluid thing.  Players come and go through FA, retire, come out of retirement, get hurt, get suspended, etc, etc, etc.  We are never 'safe' at any position, because any one player is just a single play away from being out of the league.  We need to have the best players we can possibly get, and continue to fill our roster with quality players.  BPA gives us a great pool of players to keep the roster stocked, as the unknown comes and bites us in the ass.

who's our back up to any of those positions?

I more meant 1st or 2nd round need i.e. starters or heavy rotation players, but DA is about as good as you can get for a backup QB and is only 31 which isn't that old for a backup QB, Klein is a very solid backup MLB, I honestly have no idea how good Folkerts is and G is a question mark though I suppose if Amini and Kug are healthy they are fine as backups. All of those positions including QB could very well be picked from the 4th round and later.
