Update: Charles Tillman signed by Panthers (official)

Recommended Posts

There's not going to be any competition. If anyone really wanted him he would be signed by now. A minimum contract will probably be enough.

According to Voth at BBR, the Bucs (I called it) and the Seahawks were bidding for him, too. Really knew what you were talking about there. Good job.

This team needs to decide on 1 leader and go with it instead of trying to confuse our young players with too many mentors. What's the common thread here? Jerry Richardson.

So wait a minute.

Lets say you're a 1st or 2nd year player in the secondary...you wouldn't want any tips from Tillman? A guy that's had a long prosperous career?

Somehow you'd feel that your loyalties would be divided between TD or Peanut so your play would suffer because you're confused about who to take tips from?

Sounds like a good problem to me.

Weird.

can panthers still afford Jennings?

Sure can. We've got roughly $7 million in space now if the $3 million for Tillman is accurate. We'll get $2 million more cap space on June 1st when the credit for releasing DeAngelo kicks in and that will go toward signing the rookies.

Then we'll probably extend TD and maybe Kalil, which can make some more space this year. Plus Cam's new deal this summer can possibly give us some more room this year if needed.

Ok say i'm a 1st year player, hanging out in the locker room. Tillman walks up to me, puts his hand on my shoulder, and says "Hey man, always do your best." I think wow cool, he's a vet, he knows what he's talking about.

An hour later, I'm sitting in the locker room, Thomas Davis walks up. He puts his hand on my thigh and says "Never do your best."

Now I have no idea what to do, and that mindset will show on the field.

Eh.

You know when the team game plans or has film sessions they're assigned to a positional group right?

Chances are if you're a LB you'd listen to TD and if you're CB you'd listen to Peanut.

No offense...I'm not sure how you can have two NFL man of the year award winners on D and that be a bad thing.

Last year Saints signed Champ Bailey then he didn't make their 53. Was a nice way to make Champ some extra change and provide leadership during training camp. Might be our plan as well with Tillman

doubtful we shelled out $3+ million on a camp body. I suppose the contract could be heavily incentive-based but I think he makes the 53. Doubt he even practices much in training camp and throughout pre-season.

A quick thought on leadership. You can't have too many good leaders. There is no confusion. It's not one guy or the other.

20 years in the army has taught me one thing if nothing else. Good leadership is invaluable. There is no confusion when you have multiple good leaders.
