RUMOR: Panthers looking to move up to 16-20th pick

I am talking about solid contributors, not just guys listed on the roster. Out of 6 picks, Bene seems to be the only solid contributor.

Exactly how many 4th to 6th round picks do you think typically turn into all-pro starters in their first two years?

The roster is 53 guys, with only 22 of them starting.  Lower round guys that GMs 'hit' on in the draft tend to wind up as quality backups and special teamers.  More than that is gravy.

Boston flashed potential last year and Klein has been a contributor on special teams and a solid backup linebacker.  As far as what else they could be, it's still largely unknown at this point, so your writing them off is premature.

And you still haven't address the mention of our undrafted guys.

I'm not writing them off. I am exactly saying that it is too early to crown DG as king of the late rounds. I also mentioned that Norwell seems to be the only impressive UDFA. The rest are meh.

I'd hardly call Philly Brown 'meh'.

What Gettleman has done is get good value out of the vast majority of players he's acquired.  That's what good GMs do.

No one hits on every pick, but his record so far is better than you're giving credit for.

I am not saying a GM should hit on every pick. I am saying based on his record he is hardly king of the third draft day that he is being made out to be until we have more evidence.

There are spots on our team open to competition. That should give an idea of places where the coaching staff want to improve. I will call current role-players at that position "meh".

We are not going to have for competition this training camp for QB, MLB, C, TE, WR1, DT and LDE because those guys currently playing that position are solid contributors. Our current FA has been focused on OT and WR, there is a reason why.

That said gettleman seems like a conservative. He won't trade up until the later rounds. doesn't like to gamble his future.

I think in most cases it is not really plausible until round 3 as I think he will only do it if he has a grad on the player that is a round or so better than the current pick. Moving up 7 spots in the first is too costly.

Compare our roster two tears ago with what we have now.

Heck, compare prior drafts when we weren't even hitting on second and third round picks.

Biggest factor of all for me, though?

in the prior eighteen years of this team's history, we've gone to the playoffs four times, and never in back to back seasons.  In only two years as a GM, Gettleman has already reached the playoffs half as many times as our entire history before him, and the first time in consecutive seasons.  If we make the playoffs this year, it'll only take one more appearance to equal that record.

You don't accomplish that without solid choices.

A 1st and a 3rd gets us into that range and I think this is a smart move to ask around now if we are actually looking to trade up to that range. That way we can lock in a decent price early on and know what we have to give up to move to a certain spot rather than be forced to make a panic move and overspend on draft day during the 10 minute window each pick is allotted.

I am not questioning DG as a GM. I am talking specifically about the claim that he owns the third day of the draft. There is not sufficient evidence to back that claim.
