We've had the whole "pass rush vs coverage" debate on here before.

Shall I assume you come down on the coverage side?

(for the sake of full disclosure, did you ever play DB?)

I don't really come down on either side. They both play a big role in a defenses ability to get to the QB. I was more focusing on that given our current personnel that adding another very good CB to go with Norman and Bene would have a greater effect on the pass rush than another DE would. The CB would for all intents and purposes be a starter and fill a clear weakness in the pass defense whereas another DE would be another guy in the rotation on the DL.

I'm not saying we need to draft a CB instead of a DE, but assuming equal ability between the two that a CB would improve the defense the most.

What about Benwikere as a starter and White as a nickel?

I'm hoping they have atleast tried this. Then again, knowing Rivera and his tedency to not play the best player...you never know. Melvin was a starter when we had the #2 defense. I'm guessing he was a product of the dline play.

I'm curious to find out the average timeframe of his doghouse. Only norman has worked his way out. Joe Adams couldn't and I would pay for Bersin to be in it(Im talkin special teams play).

Mel doesn't play nickel, it's completely different position than outside corner in our scheme. Would be Mel and Josh with Bene in the slot. Bene fits best in the slot so that's why I think we're looking at corner, to move him there permanently. We need to get a longterm deal with Norman or our secondary could be pretty damn bad again.

You would think after Jones and Godfrey ...White would have atleast got a few reps there. I do however agree on the Norman contract. On that front, maybe they are waiting to see if he can still play within the scheme without freelancing. You never know with Norman though. We may have talked with him behind closed doors...but the guy is 28... pretty sure he wants to get PAID before he hits his 30s. He knows how good he is, if we don't extend him soon and he keeps up his pace his price will skyrocket.

Gotcha.

I guess we'll see.

Wasn't Colin Jones playing the nickel by the end of last year?

Technically Buffalo, but yes. And he played pretty damn well. Wouldn't be able to cover a guy like Randall Cobb, but was effective against the run and never got burnt too badly.

Yeap and Jones is a keeper. If not a starter he is still good depth to have. Nickle and Safety combo ontop of being a special teams ace.. his speed is not too shabby either. If he had hands we probably would have tried him on punt returns lol. Seems like a Rivera guy all the way.

Don't see us finding someone at corner that can contribute right away? This draft is loaded with talented corners that are all projected to be late first/early second round guys. In fact, we have been meeting with and working out many of them. I'd say corner is pretty high on Gettleman's wish list based on our player meetings thus far.

Byron Jones

Kevin Johnson

Ronald Darby

Trae Waynes

All corners we have met with that could have an immediate impact and be available at 25.

Waynes will be gone, but the rest are in play.  Personally, I want Jones, and not because he was a workout warrior--I like him because he is very smart.   I think he will be a star in this league for a long time.

Most of the best CBs are smart.  They study WRs, schemes, tendencies, etc.  Combine that with freaky athleticism and you get Deon Sanders.
