Voth looks at the history of our top three draft slots

The Recent History of Draft Picks No. 25, No. 57 and No. 89

Voth gives a ten year history of who's been picked at these positions.

Among the notables...

25

MLB Jon Beason, 2007 (having traded down from #14)

QB Tim Te-bow, 2010 (Broncos)

57

WR Devin Hester, 2006 (Bears)

DT Terrance Cody, 2010 (Ravens)

*Ryan Kalil was picked two spots later in 2007.  We also picked at 59 in 2009 and took Sherrod Martin.

89

The Panthers have picked at this spot (ironically enough) three times in the past ten years.  The results were...ugly

DT Atiyyah Ellison, 2005 (traded up to get him; he didn't even made the team; bounced around for a few years but never stuck anywhere)

OT Rashad Butler, 2006 (kept him one year, he never played; spent time with the Texans; last seen when he signed with the Steelers and quit two days later)

WR Armanti Edwards, 2010 (traded up, giving away the 2011 second round pick which turned out to be #1 in that round; the rest is history)

Oy :(

More from Voth...

- Only three of the past 10 players taken at No. 25 are still on the teams that drafted them, and all three are on their rookie contracts.

- Of the 30 picks listed above, just seven remain on their original teams...11 are out of the league.

- While the best player in franchise history wore No. 89, that number has not been kind to the Panthers in the draft. Armanti Edwards, Rashad Butler, and Atiyyah Ellison combined to make zero starts in Carolina.

- Other notable picks at No. 57: WR Mark Carrier (’87, Tampa Bay), QB Frank Reich (’85, Buffalo)

Both Carrier and Reich ended up on the original Panthers roster.

Not a very good history. But I'll rest assured that DG hasn't picked at 25, or 57 or 89 yet. He can break the trend. At least that's what I tell myself.

Gettleman's first three rounds in the last two drafts...

2013

1 (14) DT Star Lotulelei

2 (44) DT Kawann Short

3 (74) Pick was traded by Hurney to move up the prior year and get Frank Alexander

2014

1 (28) WR Kelvin Benjamin

2 (60) Kony Ealy

3 (92) Trai Turner

Voth credits Gettleman with being "great" in the first three rounds ("5 for 5" in one tweet).  We've also seen guys like Bene Benwikere and A J Klein taken in the fifth and Tre' Boston in the 4th, all of whom have shown promise.

I'll take that.

This.  I know it's one of the slowest times of the year for NFL news, but surely there's something better than this to write about.

I actually do find it interesting to note the quality of players taken at those draft slots in prior years.

Helps form an idea of what we might get at those spots.

I don't see the point at all.  Every draft is different and every draft class is different in terms of depth.
