Predicting the Depth Chart (pre-draft nonsense)

Recommended Posts

I wanted to take a shot at predicting the final 53 assuming that we would be picking certain positions in the draft.  Here is my predicted 53:

Offense (24)

QB (3): (1) Cam Newton (2) Derek Anderson (3) Joe Webb

RB (4): (1) Jonathan Stewart (2) Fozzy Whittaker (3) Draft Pick (4) Jordan Todman

FB (1): (1) Mike Tolbert

WR (5): (1) Kelvin Benjamin (2) Draft Pick (3) Jerricho Cotchery (4) Corey Brown (5) Ted Ginn

TE (2): (1) Greg Olsen (2) Ed Dickson

LT (2): (1) Michael Oher (2) Draft Pick

LG (2): (1) Andrew Norwell (2) Amini Silatolu

C (1): (1) Ryan Kalil

RG (2): (1) Trai Turner  (2) Chris Scott

RT (2): (1) Mike Remmers (2) Jonathan Martin

Defense (26)

RDE (3): (1) Kony Ealy (2) Frank Alexander (3) Wes Horton

LDE (2): (1)Charles Johnson (2) Draft Pick

NT (3): (1) Star Lotulelei (2) Dwan Edwards (3)Draft Pick

DT (2): (1) Kawann Short (2) Colin Cole

SLB (2): (1) A.J. Klein (2) Adarius Glanton

MLB (2):  (1) Luke Kuechly (2) Jason Trusnik

WLB (2): (1) Thomas Davis (2) Draft Pick

RCB (2): (1) Josh Norman (2) Draft Pick

LCB (3): (1) Bene Benwikere (2) Melvin White (3) Teddy Williams

SS (2): (1) Robert Lester (2) Roman Harper

FS (3): (1)Tre Boston (2)Kurt Coleman (3)Colin Jones

ST (3)

P (1) Brad Nortman

K (1) Graham Gano

LS (1) JJ Jensan

This means we drafted the following positions, in no particular order: RB, WR, T, DE, DT, LB, and CB. (Two of our draft picks must have been used to better position ourselves in the draft.)

Some notable cuts: Jarret Boykin, Nate Chandler, Fernando Velasco, David Foucault, Richie Brockel, Darrin Reaves, Mario Addison, Brandon Williams, Ben Jacobs, DeAndre Presely, Carrington Byndom, Brian Folkerts

This was much harder than I thought it would be, which is a good thing.  Lot of young talent on this team.

What is your completely BS prediction of the final 53?

*Adjusted by request, cut Brandon Williams, Added Dwan Edwards
*Adjusted by request, cut Brian Folkerts, Added JJ Jansen

This means we drafted the following positions, in no particular order: RB, WR, T, S, LB, and CB. (Two of our draft picks must have been used to better position ourselves in the draft.

I've done these in the past, you always overlook ST value ala rickie brockel. Most times team will carry 3 centers or 2 true Cs & OG that can do it in a pinch. TE group have grown more cross the league, not a chance they only carry 2.

7 draft picks(depends on UFDAs/claims/other FAs, could be more/less) focused on offense. I feel dave will make some trades, maybe even for future picks. I think the DL is set, I know dave and other smart gms feel you cannt have enough DL, not me 9 is enough. Id make sure to have 2 on the PS tho.

not buying robert lester hype form brown. Armini never cared for him, in football sense. I consider tolbert a RB too lazy to change it. I may even come back for my PS roster too........

Good concept. I like where your head's at with most of it. 2 things would be Horton vs. Addison and Glanton vs. draft pick.

Horton's job is primarily run-stopping DE, whereas Addison is pass rush specialist and was 2nd last year with 6 1/2 sacks behind CJ's 8 1/2. Addison would probably stay and Alexander/Ealy would split Horton's snaps.

The SLB comes off the field for our nickel defense, which we actually spend more snaps in than our starting base defense. A back-up SLB isn't as necessary, and I can see the new guy Tusnik filling in if Klein gets hurt since it's primarily a run-stop position. If Glanton can back up TD at WLB, he'll stay and no pick needed. If Glanton can't be a back-up WLB, he'll be replaced by a draft pick.

Just my $.02 and again nice job.

Just for reference here is the roster from last year.

http://www.panthers.com/news/article-2/Breaking-down-the-53-man-roster/f8b6396f-4ac3-4bc5-b3d3-97deec514f5a

We had 4 tight ends last year. I would be shocked if we didn't have at least 3 this year.

I think you had 10 Defensive lineman and 10 defensive backs whereas we only had 9 of each last year.

Also we started last year with only 4 running backs including Tolbert.

Either way there is no set rule of how many of each position we have to keep. Sounds like ST will carry more weight this year in the decisions.

Depending on the rookies perform there could be quite a few 2014 Panthers no longer on the team.

You had a few tough decisions.  That is good.  When you start cutting players you wanted to keep, your roster is brimming.

I think this is pretty dang close to what I have been thinking--I kept nodding my head in agreement.  Your draft picks are exactly where I would supplement the roster, fwiw.  I have a few things that I would like to point out that were "ballsy" calls.

1. Lester takes the SS job from Harper. Interesting.  I don't like Harper, but I thought if anyone takes the job it would be Coleman--or a draft pick.  RR loves Harper, but the SS situation could go several different ways.

2. Brockel cut.  They seem to like him.  Not offering a counter suggestion-I have tried to cut him every year for the past 2 or 3, but they keep giving him a jersey.

3. I like Addison over Horton if Alexander is on the roster. He gives us better special teams play.   I imagine you struggled over that call.

4. Chandler getting cut is smart in April.  However, I am hoping that he learned some technique and worked on his lower body strength in the offseason.  He could be improved, and we just signed him to a contract last year.  I am saying he could be the "turnaround player of the year."

5. Is Turner the backup center?  Regardless, I might keep Velasco over Scott.

6. I am guessing we draft a RB earlier than most think, and that RB becomes the #2 back.

I am never right when I try to figure this stuff out, but it is interesting to see what you have done here.  Thanks for sharing.
