Another Mock for Your Consideration...

CatalystNX:  The only thing that really bothers me, and I don't think you can meet all needs, is the lateness of the CB.  In my opinion, we need to draft a CB early because Ball went to Chicago.  We need a starter.

Another position I think we need early is DE.   I am confident that Gettlemen is going to lowball CJ next year--he is a good player, but has not played up to the level of his contract, IMO.

I wonder if we take another DT in the first or second, but we could .

I like the Corey Robinson pick.  He was made to look bad vs. Tex AM in the opener, but frankly, the SC OL and DLs were not ready to play.  I think that hurt his stock.  He would be a great RT, but I don't think he has LT feet.

To me, we have to draft these positions early--CB, WR, and DE.

All in all, I kinda like this mock. My only change would be at #1. Personally, I would rather go with a "Hog Mollie" DE instead of a DT. I just feel it is more urgent to find a Hardy replacement than add depth to the DT corp.

Other than that, not too bad.

Our starting CBs are both 5th rounders, the draft is deeper with #2 WR types than #1 types, and our DEs are a 2nd rounder, 2 3rd rounders, and 2 UDFAs.

Why are Colin and Dwan able to play at their age? Because big men who can move are very rare to find, so if the chance to get an elite DT comes along, you draft him and sleep well that night, since the QBs we will face will be having nightmares about our D-Line never getting tired, always stuffing the run inside, and collapsing the middle of the pocket into his face when he drops back.

As deep as this draft is with WRs, it'd be a shame to only walk away with one...you must have a lot of faith in Hardy.

I like the multiple oline picks but I'd pick a higher tier WR and use one of those later 4-5th rounds for another WR.

I'm ok with everything else.

It would be his 3rd DT he's taken in the first 2 rounds in 3 years. DT is one position we absolutely don't need. Would be a complete luxury pick. So far Gettleman has not set the team up to take BPA.

I agree that this would be a pure BPA pick but if we get our positions In the next several rounds we still have who we need and one more nasty beast on the line.

Right, but if you are expecting rookie starters, and I am only assuming that is the case, drafting a fifth round cb is not the recipe for success.  Norman took 3 years to get it, and Benwikere has a limited body of work to make any assumptions about him.  I think he is a gem, but we shall see.

Our DEs in the first or second round took a few years to develop.  Johnson was limited until his fourth year, and the others have yet to show elite play.  The UDFAs are limited and probably maxed out.  If I am looking for a potential sack artist, I am not drafting a DE late.

I like the DT idea, but to draft a rotational DT when you are pretty set (for now at least) in the first is not advisable, in my opinion.

Game-changing DEs are harder to find--they are more rare than a DT--you could argue.  QBs, LOTs, DEs are probably the top 3 most difficult positions to fill.  I would take a LT in the draft in other years, but frankly, I like the later T's in this draft almost as much as the first round projections.

I see your argument, but I am not happy about drafting a DT in the first when we already have Star and KK.   We have the later-round type WRs on the roster--I wanted a thoroughbred.  You can say there is depth in the draft

I don't want to sound as if I know what is right and wrong here--I am just sharing my thinking.

I see your viewpoint and I'm not going to slam you for it. Yes some of our starters took a few years to develop, but they did. In fact, we have most of our starter positions set. That's not saying our week 1 starters like Oher and Harper will be our week 17 starters, tho. Similar to last year, the vets will give way to the rookies when they're ready to take over. Of course for our future #2 WR that we draft in round 3 or 4 since the draft is deep there, the path to starting isn't very far.

The pass-rush talent in this draft at the top seems to be from 3-4 OLB type guys. The best 4-3 DE types we like that can play both run and pass look like 2nd-3rd round talent imo. Plus Kony and Frank are young starter/depth players with CJ being the old vet.

At DT, the depth behind our young starters are the two oldest players on the roster and they play just slightly fewer snaps than Star and KK, with Cole being the only player to strictly play the 1-tech. The other 3 spend the vast majority of their snaps at the 3-tech. Star is good at both, but if we have a chance to get a Kris Jenkins-like talent at DT, I think Gettleman will do it. Rotation on the D-Line to keep those big boys fresh in the 4th quarter is critical. Yeah it's not as sexy as getting a WR in the 1st, but that's where our team's bread and butter is and we have to stock that cupboard if we want to build the football dynasty of the 2010's instead of taking a shot at 1 Super Bowl then falling off like the Bucs and Saints have done.

tl;dr at pick #25 be prepared for it to be a DT if that's the value, since we are more than 1 or 2 players away from winning a Super Bowl
