Panthers met extensively with 6-4/336-pound DT Eddie Goldman

He looks very well put together for a 335 lbs man.  Can't say I'd be on board with using our first pick on him, but I wouldn't hate it as much as I would drafting a project OT that never pans out or a WR bust.  If Gettleman believes that the players at the positions we "need" aren't going to make good pro players, then he's gotta pick the guy he believes is going to help the team the most.

Well it did win him two super bowls.

Gettleman is Jerry Reese?

How much Gettleman had to do with the Giants drafting we will probably never know, but his job title and specialty involved pro personnel and not college scouting. He has lived up to his reputation as being a guy who can find diamonds in the rough that are overlooked on other rosters and having encyclopedic knowledge of every NFL player. He's also done very well so far finding great talent in the draft but let's hold off on on crediting him for things things he in all likelihood had little do to do with.

don't know how it was for 2014, but in 2013, both Star and Short both played 3-tech on about 2/3 of their snaps (and both played 1-tech on about 1/3 of their snaps). Edwards was almost exclusively a 3-tech, Cole a 1-tech. So if we have three guys we like primarily at 3-tech (Star, Short, Dwan), but only one we like primarily at 1-tech (Cole, who turns 35 in June), then it seems we have a need at 1-tech, and that is Goldman's position. So he is not just a BPA, he's a BPA at a position of need

here's the article breaking it down:

[edit: basically the url is blocked, it's another Panthers blog. Here's the pertinent info from his very detailed break-down...]

"Edwards was almost exclusively a 3-tech, Cole a 1-tech."

Kawann Short, 2013

68% at 3-tech

31% at 1-tech

Star, 2013

62% at 3-tech (his snaps at 3-tech went up when Dwan was hurt)

35% at 1-tech (his snaps at 1-tech went up when Cole was hurt)

if he's right with all that, then as best as i can tell, this is what we were looking at in 2013:

3-tech spot

374 snaps - Star

352 snaps - Short

298 snaps - D.Edwards

1-tech spot

310 snaps - Cole <----this is who Goldman would replace

211 snaps - Star

161 snaps - Short

36 snaps - D.Edwards

296 snaps - other/none

0-tech/2-tech/4-tech/etc spot

up to 296 snaps - ??

***************************************************

to add to this, here are games started in 2013 and 2014:

2013

16 starts in 16 games - Star

13 starts in 15 games - Cole <----- who Goldman would replace

3 starts in 11 games - Edwards

zero starts in 16 games - Short

2014

13 starts in 14 games - Star

10 starts in 16 games - Cole <----- who Goldman would replace

9 starts in 16 games - Short

zero starts in 16 games - Edwards

Part of me would hate that we wouldn't be going offense, but I can still see the logic in this pick. Like gettlemanjack mentioned, depth is very important for a well-functioning D-line. At first glance you would think that Goldman wouldn't get enough playing time, but that is not the case. Having 3-4 good DT's is a very good investment, which keeps your talent fresh on the field. Splitting Star, Short, Goldman, and Dwan 50/50 alone would give opposing offensive lines ZERO breathers.

It'd be like trying to pitch against the '96 New York Yankees. Who are you going to pitch around?

Pie for the NYY reference

Considering fans criticized the Kuechly, Benwikere and Ealy picks, I say STFU and wait to see what transpires. We're fans. The Panthers don't another stud DT or LB or RB... until we do.

So why the fug do we need a forum dedicated to a sports team if we agree with everything they do?

There isn't poo to talk about than right??

Did you stfu on all of Hurney's moves??

The forum is just a dck measuring contest of who's right and who's wrong. It's an exercise or outlet for the fans. Nothing more. Because none of us have actual affect on the team.

But in a good way, it's for like minded people to enjoy the drama of the sport. Every so often you might learn something about this or that. Or get in argument about this or that.

There is no point. The sun will eventually swallow us all.

If he is the next Kris Jenkins with a better attitude who can't get behind drafting him again. Who wouldn't have given up a 1 instead of a 2 for Kris if he would have had more effort and dedication to the game. He would be dynamite in the second but not a bad choice in the first. Just the kind of big dude that Gettleman likes.

In 2013, with that awesome DL, we only allowed 15.1 pts/game, #2 in the NFL

last year, if we had held everybody to less than 17 points, we'd have only lost 4 games. As it was, last year we allowed 23.4 pts/game, #21 in the NFL.

Points Scored by Panthers last year:

41 @ Saints - W

34 @ Falcons - W

37 @ Bengals - T

31 v Bears - W

26 v Cards (PLAYOFFS) - W

24 v Lions - W

21 @ Eagles - L

20 @ Bucs - W

19 v Steelers - L

19 v Bucs - W

17 @ Seahawks (PLAYOFFS) - L

17 v Falcons - L

17 @ Packers - L

17 v Browns - W

----------------------------------------

13 @ Vikings - L

10 @ Ravens - L

10 v Saints - L

9 v Seattle - L

Point was the Giants defensive line was dominant.
