Former Bucs GM: We Spied On Justin Blackmon's Favorite Bar For A Week

It's definitely not crazy when you're talking about making the type of huge investment that spending the #1 pick in the NFL draft represents.  It's bigger than just the money.  It's the value of that pick.  It's the fact that a #1 overall draft pick QB is going to immediately become the face of your franchise.  A franchise that's worth upwards of a billion dollars.  It's a HUGE investment and anyone with any sense would commit a lot of resources to make sure the right decision is made.

i get it

but they are also kids. its just kind of whackadoo that this sport has gotten to this. that's whats crazy

No, I agree.  But that's just where we're at.  It's really incomparable to any other industry because in other industries you have to work your way up the ladder to get in a position to make millions.  In pro sports, you're taking kids who oftentimes come from rough backgrounds handing them millions of dollars and throwing them in the spotlight immediately.  When you think about it, it's amazing that there aren't a lot more Jamarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf type stories out there.

We will look back 10 years from now and regret passing on Dorial Green-Beckham. Just like every team has who passed up similar guys like Randy Moss and Dez Bryant.

You mention Randy Moss and Dez Bryant, but conveniently leave out guys like Josh Gordon and Justin Blackmon.

“We found out there was a bar called the Cricket Inn or the Cricket, which was a popular bar there in Oklahoma State,” said Dominik. “He [the scout] sat there for one week, went in at 3 o’clock every day and stayed until 11 o’clock at night. That was his job, and we checked how many times did Justin Blackmon come in? And he came in too many times and we took him off our board.”

Justin Blackmon probably came in once a day but the scout was so drunk, after staying in the bar from 3:00 until 11::00, that ever person that came in started to look like Blackmon. :)
