Panthers dine with Shaq Thompson

Only five linebackers at the combine clocked in the 4.5's. Shaq said: "I know I'm faster than a 4.6 -- it's just the little errors that I had in the first 10 yards. That's what really messed me up."

He also ran a 10.96 100m. He's plenty fast enough to play WLB or SS.

Gurley probably will be ready to play in the first 2 or 3 weeks in the season.

You think that soon? I thought I had heard that he would start the season on the PUP list which would make it mid season at the earliest. But if we draft him, I'm all for it being Week 2 or 3.

Liked him better before the combine.

even NFL.com called Shaq's combine "disappointing." I think the problem was that, based how dominant Shaq looked in college, people were expecting him to put up these Calvin Johnson-type numbers. But if you look at the "disappointing" Combine numbers Shaq did put up, they are right in line with the All-Pro players he compares to. First look at his size. He's the same size as Thomas Davis, All-Pro LB Lavonte David and All-Pro SS Kam Chancellor:

Size

6-3/242 - MLB Luke Kuechly All-Pro

6-1/242 - ILB Patrick Willis All-Pro

6-0/242 - ILB Navorro Bowman All-Pro

6-0/241 - MLB Bobby Wagner All-Pro

6-1/237 - ILB Ryan Shazier Top 15 pick last yr

6-2/234 - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

6-1/233 - OLB Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

6-3/231 - SS Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

6-1/230 - OLB Thomas Davis <---------------

6-0/228 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

6-0/228 - Landon Collins <---------------

5-11/215 - RB Marshawn Lynch All-Pro

6-0/213 - RB DeMarco Murray All-Pro

6-0/211 - SS Eric Berry All-Pro

5-10/211 - SS TJ Ward All-Pro

5-10/208 - FS Earl Thomas All-Pro

5-10/206 - SS Troy Polamalu

5-11/204 - CB Darrelle Revis All-Pro

5-11/201 - FS Ed Reed

5-11/200 - RB Jamaal Charles All-Pro

5-10/198 - RB LeSean McCoy All-Pro

5-11/196 - RB CJ Spiller Pro Bowl

6-3/195 - CB Richard Sherman All-Pro

5-10/193 CB Joe Haden All-Pro

5-11/193 - FS Devin McCourty All-Pro

Next look at his upper body strength. Of those six guys his size, Shaq is stronger than all of them but Kam Chancellor:

225 Lb. Bench Reps:

22 - Kam Chancellor

20 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

20 - OLB Aldon Smith All-Pro

19 - Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

18 - Tamba Hali All-Pro

17 - Todd Gurley

16 - LB Vontaze Burfict Pro Bowl

16 - Landon Collins <---------------

15 - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

15 - TE Jimmy Graham All-Pro

7 - WR TY Hilton Pro Bowl

DNP - Thomas Davis <--------------

Then look at his lower body strength, it's the same as the All-Pro players he compares to:

Broad Jump:

09'11" - Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

09'10" - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

09'09" - Shaq Thompson <---------------

09'08" - Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

09'07" - Thomas Davis <---------------

09'05" - FS Earl Thomas All-Pro

08'11" - RB LeSean McCoy All-Pro

Then look at his 40, also the same as the All-Pro players he compares to:

40 Yrd Dash:

4.60 - CB Richard Sherman All-Pro

4.60 - FS Devin McCourty All-Pro

4.62 - CB Joe Haden All-Pro

4.63 - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

4.64 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

4.65 - Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

4.66 - Thomas Davis <---------------

4.68 - TE Rob Gronkowski All-Pro

4.69 - Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

4.77 - ILB Navorro Bowman All-Pro

4.83 - Drew Brees All-Pro

4.91 - JJ Watt All-Pro

5.24 - Tom Brady All-Pro

then look at his 3-cone. Note how much more athletic Shaq and Thomas Davis are than All-Pros like Lavonte David and Kam Chancellor:

3-Cone Drill:

6.99 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

7.00 - TE Vernon Davis All-Pro

7.03 - WR TY Hilton Pro Bowl

7.04 - TE Greg Olsen Pro Bowl

7.05 - RB Marshawn Lynch All-Pro

7.09 - OLB Thomas Davis <---------------

7.09 - RB Adrian Peterson All-Pro

7.10 - WR Dez Bryant All-Pro

7.28 - OLB Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

7.28 - KR Cordarrelle Patterson Pro Bowl

7.28 - RB DeMarco Murray All-Pro

7.30 - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

7.36 - SS Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

7.38 - Landon Collins <---------------

7.51 - LB Vontaze Burflict Pro Bowl

then look at the 20 yard shuttle, which measures sideline-to-sideline speed. Here both Thomas Davis and Shaq put up ridiculous Hall of Fame level numbers:

20 Yrd Shuttle:

3.97 - Thomas Davis <---------------

4.07 - CB Patrick Peterson All-Pro

4.08 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

4.08 - CB Darrelle Revis All-Pro

4.11 - WR Phillip Dorsett

4.12 - Luke Kuechly All-Pro

4.14 - WR Kevin White

4.17 - TE Vernon Davis All-Pro

4.17 - WR Alshon Jeffery Pro Bowl

4.18 - Cam Newton Pro Bowl

4.18 - RB LeSean McCoy All-Pro

4.18 - RB DeMarco Murray All-Pro

4.19 - WR DeSean Jackson Pro Bowl

4.21 - WR AJ Green All-Pro

4.21 - RB LaDainian Tomlinson All-Pro

4.21 - ILB Ryan Shazier Top 15 pick last yr

4.22 - RB Jamaal Charles All-Pro

4.22 - Lavonte David All-Pro <---------------

4.23 - SS Eric Berry All-Pro

4.25 - WR Julio Jones All-Pro

4.28 - Bobby Wagner All-Pro

4.33 - Richard Sherman All-Pro

4.33 - Landon Collins <---------------

4.34 - CB Joe Haden All-Pro

4.36 - WR TY Hilton Pro Bowl

4.40 - Adrian Peterson All-Pro

4.40 - KR Cordarrelle Patterson Pro Bowl

4.40 - ILB C.J. Mosley All-Pro <---------------

4.41 - Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

4.45 - Jimmy Graham All-Pro

4.46 - WR Dez Bryant All-Pro

4.47 - TE Rob Gronkowski All-Pro

4.48 - TE Greg Olsen Pro Bowl

4.55 - Marshawn Lynch All-Pro

4.59 - ILB Navorro Bowman All-Pro

Finally, look at Shaq's vertical. Nothing special but still as good or better than all three of the reigning 2014 All-Pro safeties: Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Eric Weddle:

Vertical Jump:

33.5 - Shaq Thompson <---------------

33.5 - TE Rob Gronkowski All-Pro

33.5 - FS Eric Weddle All-Pro

.33.0 - WR Amari Cooper

32.0 - SS Kam Chancellor All-Pro <---------------

32.0 - FS Earl Thomas All-Pro <---------------

31.0 - WR Jordy Nelson All-Pro

24.5 - QB Tom Brady All-Pro

Still feelin Shaq in the first. He's a potential starter at OLB and could be a pressure DB in blitz packages.

Versatile and as been said 5million times...he's a football player first and formost.

one of the best and most fluid 3-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle runs I've seen and thats kinda what you want from a tackler who can shift and elude blockers and get to the football. Also means he's agile wnough to cover solid TE or slant route receivers.

I like this guy but he would be a reach at 25.

after pick 15, it kinda looks like the next 30 picks could be anyones guess on who will be impact players.

Drafting this guy just gives so many options and do you draft a guy who is mediocre at only one position, or do you go for the guy that is at the very least mediocre at multiple positions and could possibly be as valuable as a Kam Chancellor?

If you go back to that draft, Chancellor is going top-10.
