Panthers dine with Shaq Thompson

I'm torn on Thompson, depending on where we play him.

I think we have a huge hole at SS and Thompson could be a Kam Chancellor type of SS.

I also think we have an eventual need at OLB depending on Glanton/Klein, and/or the eventual end of the TD era in 2-3 years. Though this need is more down the line, I'd have a hard time getting behind a 1st round pick at LB.

Thompson is one of my favorite players in this draft and would love to have a Chancellor kind of S roaming around in our secondary, both in coverage and in the box. The fear factor and production would be incredible for us.

I do think he could be a nasty LB too, but could be an elite SS. If most franchises that are talking to him, see him as a LB in the NFL, then I'd prefer to pass on him in the 1st round. 2nd round would be okay, but I'd prefer to address other positions at #25.

Just curious how you think he compares to Chancellor? I don't see it at all, but you must have your reasons for the comparison?

He ran a 4.64 but plays faster.  He is 6-1 and about 228 lbs.  I think we are looking at him at SS.

Davis played SS for a while before moving to LB, and he was not that great until he settled in.  However, he played both WLB and SLB after SS, so maybe the scheme and multiple position changes impacted his development.

If he is there in the first and we feel really good that he can start over Harper day 1, I have no problem taking him in the first round.  Our D will have eliminated a weakness, leaving only 1 more starting spot (CB) to address.  It would be awesome.

I think he'll be a solid enough player, but I don't think he has TD's athleticism or fire.

He's actually a carbon copy essentially of TD in regards to athleticism. I'm not sure how you could comment on his fire though?

I would disagree wholeheartedly.

They have almost identical combine measurables (TD barely better 40 time, Shaq about a tenth of a second better in 3 cone, Shaq two inches more on broad, TD three inches more on vert), and as someone who actually knew who Shaq Thompson was before this season, I can promise you he's an incredible athlete.

Incredible athlete, sure. But to suggest that his and Thomas Davis' play mirror each other is totally off base.

Care to elaborate instead of just saying it's "off base" without any reason why? Oh, and I'm pretty sure I said in regards to athleticism he's basically a carbon copy to TD, nothing about their play mirroring one another (even if Shaq does a lot of similar things in the Huskies Defense). There's a reason people who get paid to be Draft analysts compare him to TD pretty regularly (other guy is Lavonte David who is a similar type of backer btw). It's really not hard to see the similarities.
