Why Picking up Jonathan Martin was a Waste of Time...

The only potential downside to claiming Martin is that it pushed Carolina back down the list for a waiver claim. Other than that, this is an almost-zero risk, all upside addition.

That only happens in fantasy football, not real life. Waiver claim position won't change until regular season week 3 or 4 based on the current W-L records at that time.

OL in their first and even second year olin the league look like they are on roller skates and typically get beaten, esp. by very good defensive fronts. thats the the same with pretty much every OL taken regardless of where they are selected including the first round. very few of the guys taken in even the first 5-10 picks don't have that happen to them.

you find a couple games very early on his career where he gets beat and expect that to be your case for picking him up on the cheap was a waste of time? seems to me the only onea wasting time were the ones opening up this thread.

you found what you wanted to find....some glimmer of proof that martin is the soft turd you believe him to be because you just can't get over the fact that your team picked him up because they see something you don't or are at least willing to have what you don't have...an open mind.

Ultimately knowing Rivera and Gettlemen's recent track record (Rivera going back to not replacing Otah), I have reason to be apprehensive with the guys they picked up.  I've said this in my draft thread's, our season hinge's on the production of our O-line.  So far it's been worst case scenario this free agency period.  The draft isn't looking as strong as I hoped concerning OTs.  So as of now, its not looking so good for us.  The only dark horse is Remmers.

Right. I though it shuffled after claims, but I thought wrong... ironically, I don't play fantasy football.

Yeah I can see your point with Harbaugh.

All that said, I just don't want to have the Byron Bell/Nate Chandler year again. We are hoping that Oher (who probably is penciled in as a starter) and Martin can become what people thought they would be. We can't afford to waste this kind of time. What if the Panthers decide to pass up on say, Ereck Flowers, because they believe Oher and Martin will be good enough pieces they've brought in? That is the problems signings like these can cause.

Your arguments are based upon "what ifs" and hypotheticals.

What if this was a decent thread?

If you want to show a player on video to see how bad he is then be fair and show the whole tape with the good and the bad.

It's just like when someone shows a highlight video of someone and talks about how the video shows how good the player is.

Martin played badly early on at Miami and was then set upon by Incognito and his coaches as a whipping boy. He didn't improve. He hated being on that team, but he made some efforts to be part of Incognito's club, because that's how lines have to work. The jerks kept dogging him, though, and I can't blame him for just saying to heck with it.

Then he moves on to San Francisco which was as disfunctional of a team as you could ask for.

Martin's a smart kid, has the strength and size to play the position, and if he applies himself, he could be a bargain pick up for us. If he doesn't work out, then I really hate it for him. He's got a chance, let's see what he does.

If he puts on a Panthers jersey, I'm going to cheer for him.

I'm searching for highlights on him, trying to get myself hyped on what he could bring.  Of course it's always hard to find actual highlights of offensive lineman unless they are legendary good.

Your right. Offensive and defensive line doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I believe posting Martins PFF stats would be the second best option. Weekly view would be perfect because if you do overall one or two games could really bring someone down.

Yea Martin now wears a Panthers jersey. Until he shows that he was a waste of time, I will cheer for him to succeed. I will admit that his career thus far has been lackluster, but that doesn't mean he has no room or ability to improve. If Gettleman believes he was worth investing in, so do I, cus Gettleman knows a hell of a lot more than me.
