Phillip Dorsett to meet with Panthers

With some of the speedy guys, you gotta check out their in-game quickness and I think Dorsett has it for the NFL.  Maybe even an edge over Cooks last year (who I thought kind of hit a rookie wall..his YAC wasn't what I thought it'd be).  I've seen the John Brown comparisons which aren't totally off base.

I just think Dorsett is another prospect hyped by his 40. Maybe I'm wrong. I do think Devin smith is the better WR.

Either way I believe Dorsett could be drafted in the second round, maybe fall to the 3rd.

I think Devin smith is way overhyped. Dorsett over smith any day.

Seven-year NFL veteran S Matt Bowen (30 starts for 3 teams, primarily at SS) on Dorsett:

On whether Dorsett's speed translates to the field:

"the speed and the lateral movement that allow him to separate versus coverage is legit. They flashed every day on the practice field when I watched Dorsett at the Senior Bowl, and they absolutely jump off the screen on the game tape. ... "SPEED…RIDICULOUS SPEED" ... That's exactly what I wrote in my notes on the first day of Senior Bowl workouts when watching him ... This guy could fly. Like he was shot out of a cannon or something. ... and could change directions. ... crazy speed ... speed and sudden burst ...speed and acceleration ... the speed of Dorsett, it's going to cost you" [$$$$$ too]

On Dorsett as a deep threat:

"At times, the deep ball is a layup for Dorsett because of his ability to just blow past a safety over the top or beat a cornerback ... That's just too easy. ... You want a receiver that can blow the roof off the secondary? Then take a look at Dorsett." [imagine him with Cam's long-range cannon arm]

On whether Dorsett is a one-trick-pony:

"it wasn't just the deep ball that stood out... Dorsett displayed a lightning fast burst at the top of the break on the quick slant, and he could win inside on the option route by pulling away from a defender's leverage or snap back to the ball on the curl route.... I want to highlight the ability of Dorsett underneath as a receiver that can produce after the catch on a basic shallow crossing route from the back side of the formation. ... we see the speed and acceleration after the catch from Dorsett as he turns a shallow crossing route into an explosive gain. ... That's a luxury to have on offense when the quarterback can throw a high-percentage ball (inside breaking route) ... bring him underneath to get him the ball in space

...

At the NFL combine in Indianapolis, Dorsett put on a show with an..6.70 second three-cone time—the top time for a wide receiver. That's where you see the immediate, quick and sudden change-of-direction speed along with the explosive ability

...

If you are looking for a pro comparison on Dorsett: T.Y. Hilton... a receiver who can run the vertical game and also create issues for opposing defenses underneath because of his ability to produce chunks of yardage after the catch. ... Dorsett is the type of prospect who brings the same type of big-play ability to the next level. He has the speed to beat defenses over the top, the lateral quickness to win at the line of scrimmage versus press and the open-field burst to turn a slant or option route into an explosive play by eliminating angles from the secondary. Remember, this isn't just a track guy in pads who runs the occasional go route. Dorsett played in a pro-style system down in Miami, averaged over 20 yards per catch and can win on a variety of route concepts from outside the numbers or in the slot."

I finally got to sit down and look at a little bit of tape on several top WR's and I think I was most intrigued by the potential of Dorsett. People like to say he's a mix of an Antonio Brown, Brandin Cooks and TY Hilton and I can say I see some of those guys in his game. I would say he's not got the lateral quickness of Brandin Cooks but he's got very good lateral quickness. He finds zones to catch the ball to make it easier on his QB who leaves a lot to be desired in terms of passing the ball. He's got great down field speed that can blow the top off coverage along with concentration to make the catches in stride that reminds me a lot of TY Hilton. I felt like Dorsett fought off CB's at the line of scrimmage well considering his smaller size and gained quality separation without having to pushoff. Overall I'm going all in on Dorsett as my favorite pick at #25 unless someone falls that's clear bpa at OT like Flowers or Peat. Even then I'm starting to believe WR in the first is the way to go if we want to help Cam progress as a QB. I give an honorable mention to Perriman who I believe will go earlier than people expect, he's raw in terms of route running but if it clicks he'll be a superstar.
