Cosell on top WRs in draft via MMQB

Actually, route running is not a strong point for any of these guys that Cosell discussed except for Cooper according to him.

But, Cosell said that the large majority of receivers that come into the league have to improve that skill.

From my research, Agholor and Hardy run pretty good routes as well.

There is a reason the Panthers like Strong. I would love for him to be the pick. He and KB would be a great combo.

Just to play devil's advocate, because I do like Strong just not as much as some other WRs with a first round grade, but why do you believe KB and Strong would make a great combo? Obviously having two first round receivers as opposed to one is an upgrade over what we currently have on the roster.

But...

I think Strong and Kelvin are largely very similar receivers. Despite his fast timed speed, Strong doesn't seem to play to that speed and rarely beats college CBs deep. The majority of his catches in college are in tight windows and contested. Strong isn't very fluid and struggles getting in and out of his breaks while it is difficult for him to really sink his hips. He can improve, but he will likely always struggle to create separation from NFL DBs despite his straight line speed. I think Kelvin and Strong would be nice to have, but their strengths are similar and their weaknesses are similar. Those two would make for some great catches with corners draped all over them and great red zone options, but I'd rather we target a receiver that offers more after the catch, someone who can consistently outrun defenses,  and someone who get vertical. One would thing based on his 40 time that Strong can be that guy, and maybe he can, but with all this talk about Gettleman being big on tape and game film, he has to see similar things that many of us do watching everything that is available on Strong online. I think both Kelvin and Strong can be high end possession receivers, but we can get receivers that offer something different to this offense in the first.

I see a lot of people talking about how Strong rarely gets deep, doesn't create separation, etc. but in watching him play, I've noticed that a lot of times he's having to slow down to wait on the ball to get there.  He created separation and got open, but by the time the ball gets there he's having to make a contested catch.

See, what I want most in a guy opposite KB is really reliable hands.

Somebody tell me Strong has those. If not, tell me who does.

Strong does have reliable hands. He also consistently has defenders draped all over him much like Kelvin. NFL CBs will be in his hip constantly waiting to knock balls away. Hopefully both can keep getting better at shielding defenders with their big frames.

I've seen that as well. Tough to really see what is happening throughout the play without coaches film or sideline views. I'd welcome Strong here with open arms in hopes that if we took him, we'd get a pure deep threat or YAC nightmare in the mid rounds.

From what I'm analyzing with G-Man's signings and draft selections, we're building a high possession offense that wears down opposing defenses. He's looking to amass an offense that moves the chains. Not quick strikes. It's kinda like bully fighting with body shots. Of course, that doesn't mean we're not gonna draft a speed demon but judging from G-Man's "big men help you compete" philosophy it seems like Strong is a logical choice for our scheme.

Pretty much

The Panthers are a ball control offense that is predicated on running the ball. I don't know why a number of people think the Panthers are going to be some quick strike offense that is aggressively throwing it down the field like the Cardinals do.

KB + Strong = Fitzgerald + Boldin.

Neither of them were particularly fast or anything.  Obviously KB and Fitz are two very different receivers but they bring similar type of impact on an offense.  I see a bit of Boldin in Strong.  I think he'd be a great fit on the team.  We don't need a Dorsett who just runs fast in a straight line for hail marys and post routes.  We have Ginn for that (Ginn is Dorsett's ceiling, imo) as well as Brown who has proven to have the ability to be more than just that.

I get what you're saying but he also mentioned that we need to bring speed into this offense. In my opinion, big/explosive plays in the modern NFL are what win games. With the margin between winning and losing so small today, a big play is often the difference between winning and losing. Thankfully we brought in Ginn but I don't view him as a long-term solution to our lack of big plays. I'd like to see someone brought in that can win deep to maximize Cam's big arm and deep accuracy.

Also note that he had Zero drops at his pro day.  And there is a reason some of the analyst at the combine were comparing him to Fitzgerald as far as athletic ability and Hands

For the record, I typed my above post, had to walk away to help the wife bring in groceries, then came back and clicked post.  This quote hadn't been posted yet, heh.
