Why drafting a RB or defense won't solve our issues.

A few years ago we drafted a player we didn't exactly have a "need' for at the time, a kid by the name of Luke.

Seems to have worked out okay so far.

My hope was that we would draft Luke that year. With both our star linebackers coming off of major injuries there was certainly no guarantees. Our 2011 defense struggled mightily after losing Beason and Davis and we definitely had a need at the LB position despite the short sighted opinions of some on here. Besides Luke was definitely bpa when we chose him.

Let's be serious for one moment, if we didn't have Kony Ealy we'd have Mario Addison penciled in at starting at DE opposite Charles Johnson and DE would be a HUGE need for us right now.  We'd just be shifting the need to another position, a position that IMO Gettleman values over just about everything else except QB.  The guy just gushes about pass rushers.

Didn't we have success with Kawann playing DE more than any of our real DE. If we would have drafted another receiver last season I would have no problem what so ever with drafting defense in the first 3 rounds this year.

But that didn't happen

but this contradicts your argument... Cam was clearly the best player in that draft, so we took the BPA. And Gettleman has preached over and over that he believes in the BPA philosophy, so Kelvin must have been BPA when we drafted last year. We just happened to have needs for them. They weren't drafted because of that, though

He wasn't even the consensus #1 qb. Most "experts" didn't have him top 10 overall.

The patriots just won the SB thanks to their passing game.......

Lol no. Blount was a workhorse back for them playing amazingly, and the main reason they won was their elite secondary. They had a decent passing game but not like it was in 2007 or 2011 for them.

......"The guy just gushes about pass rushers." I hate to see how he really feels about OTs because he's never, ever drafted one. OT has been a NEED on this team for at least 3 years now. I can't wait until he finally drafts an OT, I'm going to be thrilled. Come on Dave, I don't care which round, just draft at least ONE, man. You can do it, I have faith in you!!

Purely drafting for need is obviously not the solution. OP is attempting to make some kind of point, but not doing well at all.

We've poured a lot of resources into our defense, and there isn't anything wrong with that. But people seem to have a short memory about how bad that defense was at one point last year. 6 blowout losses in 10 games. That's pretty fugging bad. There really is no way around that.

DE is a need with the loss of Hardy, and our secondary is still a work in progress. Obviously we still need to keep upgrading our D.

But last season made it pretty clear that we definitely need more offensive firepower if we want to compete with the best of the NFC, and not just squeak by flawed teams. If we have the opportunity to grab another legit WR in this years draft, Gettleman should and will make the pick.

For once I would like us to build around Cam, you know the guy we plan on giving 100 million to. During free agency we addressed our special teams so people we're going with the idea that we were going to draft a receiver or a lineman with the first pick but now they want a RB. I don't get it, you change your mind all of a sudden cause we brought him in for a workout?

So instead of giving our a franchise player some protection or a bonafide 1st round talent at WR, we are going to draft a RB or a defensive player? that makes absolutely no sense.

Short can fill in at DE in certain situations, but there's no way he's playing as an every down DE in a 4-3.  That's insane.

You just want to reach, reach, reach based on perceived need.  "Winning" the draft and free agency oftentimes doesn't translate to winning on the field.  Media "experts" aren't actual experts or they'd be working in NFL front offices.
