Saints trading again?

Mr. Scot

I'd say it could still happen.

After what you've seen this offseason, you don't think another trade like this could materialize?

It would be a surprise to me, because I don't think they wanted to get rid of both. Grubbs wasn't open to a pay cut, so he's the one that left. By all accounts, Jahri is open to doing something with his contract.

The Saints aren't making moves just to make moves. They have a plan. I don't think that plan involves going into next year with an entirely new interior line, but I could be wrong. If they can't work out the numbers on the contract, I guess it could happen.

$1.5M under, but signing their draft picks will put them $2.5M over. They have plenty of time to figure out what they want to do with him, but he can't stay on his current contract and restructuring really isn't an option for him either. Pay cut, trade or release are their options in that order.

I see the about $1.8m in current space, but I've got the draft picks counting less. Their first 5 picks will count toward the top 51 at about $5.2m, but they'll bump 5 salaries out of the top 51 totaling about $2.6m, so the net hit would be $2.6m. That would put them at $800k over the cap.

I was going off this.

New Orleans would be about $2.8 million over the salary cap once rookies are signed so clearly there is work that needs to be done before July when they will begin to sign their top draft choices.

Fixed it for you.

They had a plan, it didn't work, now they have to start new.

Realistically though, did you foresee trading Graham and Stills?

I'd say those were 'surprises' too.

Word from most insiders is that the Saints are willing to part with pretty much anybody but Brees and Cooks. Given that and the salary cap numbers, I won't be too surprised if Evans winds up gone. Maybe not to the Bills, but somewhere.

Hell no I didn't see those trades coming lol. Not sure anyone did.

But the goal in all of this is to improve the oline and defense. Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton both spoke on it extensively in recent press conferences. Obviously, if they get what they want for Evans, he's gone. I think that should go for most players on any roster. But you have to move him with a plan. You trade him. Who plays his position? How much will the replacement cost? Is there a big difference between the two numbers? Can the replacement play as good or better than Evans?

I would say Drew is the only untouchable player on the roster. But the only way the Saints are getting off a player is if they feel like they're improving the team.

Every teams plans to win the Super Bowl.

That doesn't guarantee that the steps they take to do so are good ones.

I was more referencing the common Saints went all in last year thought process. In all reality, they signed one free agent lol. I just don't understand the whole they really went all in thought process, just because they signed a high prices all pro safety who was 28. Byrd wasn't just a last year signing.

this week, both the Saints GM and head coach said they are keeping RG Jahri Evans and they just gave him a $500,000 bonus on Tuesday. last season PFF rated Evans as a horrible pass blocker (-17.7) but a very good run blocker (+9.6). The LG that they traded, Grubbs, was graded negative as both a pass blocker (-0.4) and run blocker (-2.4). He is being replaced by Tim Lelito, who graded negative as a pass blocker (-2.4) but positive as a run blocker (+2.0)
