D.J. Humphries

What not to like: Marginal measurables, marginal athleticism, marginal movement skills.

When I watch this Humphries, I see Morgan Moses.

... Just look at his numbers

???

compare Moses vs Humphries at the Combine:

40 Yrd Dash:

5.12 - Humphries

5:35 - Moses

20 Yrd Dash:

3.02 - Humphries

3.19 - Moses

10 Yrd Dash:

1.84 - Humphries

1.98 - Moses

225 Lb. Bench Reps:

26 - Humphries

refused - Moses

Vertical Jump:

31.0 - Humphries

21.5 - Moses

20 Yrd Shuttle:

4.64 - Humphries

4.95 - Moses

3-Cone Drill:

7.87 - Humphries

7.93 - Moses

Humphries' strength is his athleticism and quickness. That's why scouts have him graded as a 1st R left tackle prospect. If you want to find weaknesses in Humphries as a prospect, I'd go with:

-injury-prone: missed a lot of games to a lot of injuries. We want a guy we can rely on to play 16 games plus playoffs

-not big: reportedly played in the 280s and looked small at Florida but weighed 307 at Combine (Flowers was 329). What's the truth there? And if he really played in the 280s on film, how would he look at 307 on film? Can he stay at 307? Can he get even bigger?

-wasn't a mauler vs the run at Florida on the level of guys like big 329-pound Flowers, La'el Collins, etc. Was that because he played in the 280s? How would he look at 307?

-technique isn't flawless, same for all the OL prospects

-would it be better to focus on big maulers like 329-pound Flowers at LT? Scouts love athletic guys like Humphries at LT because they match up well against athletic DEs (Gregory, Ray, etc), but would the Panthers prefer a strong mauling RT prospect like Flowers at LT who is better against power rushers (Odighizuwa, Trey Flowers, etc)? Having two mauler-type RTs at both our OT spots makes us a tougher running team (which is awesome), makes it easier to run with Cam (a huge strength), makes us better against power rushers (who can take down and injure Big Cam easier than smaller athletic rushers), and makes both Cam and Shula want to get the ball out faster on pass plays, which is a good thing (Brees makes mediocre OTs look good because he gets the ball out so fast, and prospects like Jake Fisher are hard to judge because Oregon got the ball out so fast)

What to like: ...Versatility - played both at LT and a C in college. ... I think he's the best C prospect in the draft

Are you getting Humphries (Florida) confused with Cameron Erving (Florida St)? Erving played both C and LT and is considered the best C in the draft

if you meant Humphries, did he ever play C at Florida?

ex-scout Daniel Jeremiah writes of Humphries:

"Humphries was a 2 1/2-year starter at offensive tackle for the Gators."

Hmmm... I know we're only two weeks into preseason, but I'm liking my analysis.

Peat looks like trash, Humphries looks like trash, Scherff looks like trash, we're going to find out quick about Clemmings since he's going to be forced into starting duty at RT after Phil Loadholt's torn Achilles, Flowers has shown some promise and is going to be rushed into starting LT duties after Will Beatty's torn pectoral, Gibson is making a push to make the roster on the best OL in the NFL down in Dallas as a 7th round pick.

I said flat out I didn't like Scherff and Clemmings.  I thought Peat had a chance to be a good RT in the right system, but N.O. isn't it.  He needs to be in a power running scheme.  I saw Clemmings, Flowers, and Clemmings as being talented but very raw.  Fisher and Flowers were the only two I was really interested in at #25.

My top two in Ogbuehi (would've been very leery of him at #25 coming off of a torn ACL) and Fisher have been sidelined with injuries.
